Description
Steeped in the unique culture and history of Tampa, Florida, Cigar City Brewing began handcrafting award-winning beer in 2009. Cigar City Brewing’s ales and lagers bring to mind the sun and citrus for which Florida is known, while taking cues from the cigar industry upon which Tampa was built. Behind all of Cigar City Brewing’s liquid is the philosophy that quality is achieved by giving first rate ingredients to first rate people in a space where they are free to pursue their passion.

@Pilsner Petes East Coast Gathering-growler–pours a light tan head and hazy amber color. Aroma is dark malt-peat/roasty, earthy hops. Taste is dark malt-peat/earthy/coffee, earthy/leathery hops. Interesting. Thanks notalush for sharing.

This is dark, could be the darkest stout I’ve found yet. Not just opaque black in the glass but the stream pouring from the bottle is nearly opaque, just hints at reddish brown, otherwise barely passes any light! Large foamy head, dark brown in color. Aroma is full of roast and burnt chocolate, maybe there’s a raisin or other dark fruitiness in the background. The flavor is equally roasty, with hints of a resinous wood and burnt coffee. After the first swallow, the resinous wood starts up in the nose and now seems very apparent. Drier than expected, though full bodied without a doubt. Hops are there if you concentrate, kinda spicy, lending a long bitter finish. Alcohol is not obvious, amazingly.

Growler courtesy GodofThunder. Ruby color. Loads of coffee and chocolate in the nose on this one, luxuriant almost. Sweet balanced malt flavors, a bit nutty with a backdrop of coffee. Great coffee finish with a kiss of hops and no lack of malt backbone to finish it out.

Growler courtesy GodofThunder. Ruby color with a light head. Touch of vanilla in the nose with a touch of woodiness and tobacco makes it come across almost like a dipped cigar. But the strong vanilla flavor comes across like vanilla creme soda mixed with brown ale, not crazy about it, but vanilla isn’t my favorite. Easy finish.

32oz growler from the brewery pours up very dark with just a bit of brown peaking through right at the edges and nice mocha head. The modest strength aroma emits soft notes of cedar with faint notes of pine to fir tree hops, highly roasted malts, dark chocolate and a sense of caramel. The taste is full and bold with notes of dark roastiness, smooth cedar, dark chocolate and then a dash of caramel. By midway the cedar takes over along with some pine like fir tree hops. Into the finish I get lingering roastiness, cedar, mild pine hops and a bit of dry dark chocolate. Very tasty stuff with a load of flavor.

Growler at PilsnerPeter’s Spring Gathering. courtesy of notalush, thanks Brandon this is my first Cigar City brew. Aroma is very original, its mix of woody fumes, very different, almost like a cigar. This is all mixed up with a sweet pea aroma (in a good way) and this is very earthy and soil/muddy like a Scottish brew. The word rustic comes to mind with this aroma, weirdly smoky. The flavor is much less original but more straight up brown ale, just that sweet pea, earthy, natural, flavor. This does make an interesting brown ale which is hard to come by.

Thanks to juiceisloose for this one - shared at Peter’s NY gathering - a very turbid pour - quite sweet, even for a scotch ale, but that is really my only complaint - low carbonation, with a smooth mouthfeel - a lot of caramel, toffee, and plum, on top of a soft peaty and smoky character - a bit of roasted nuts and cherries - quite earthy, but the smoke phenols take a back seat to the sweetness.

Many thanks to Dickinsonbeer for sharing this at Peter’s NY gathering - this beer is seriously intense - so much so, that I’m glad I only got a couple of ounces of it - any more may have killed me - this beer is so bad-ass, it makes Chuck Norris cry - it’s so bad ass, that I am going to spend my entire rating saying almost nothing about the beer at all, except this: I was surprised at how the cedar was able to add an interesting and tasty dimension to the beer - why haven’t other brewers tried this? - anyway, back to the utterly useless comments - this beer is so bad ass, it made me ultra-virile for several minutes, and I impregnated several woman just by looking at them - it’s so bad ass, it makes that dude in Tennessee with 21 kids look like a homosexual in comparison - your mama’s so fat, when she gets on the scale, it says, "to be continuned" - wait...I seem to have gotten off topic...that’s how bad ass this beer is!
