Description

Original rating: 5/3/03. Nice and dark color with little head. Smooth going down, similar to other dubbels but never a bad choice to drink.

Rerate 4/11/06. Almost two years has past and I have learned more about beer. While this is a fine brew it lacks the taste and palate for a Belgian of this style. 7/4/6/3/14

Rerate: 4/16/13. Wow, I cannot believe that it has been almost 10 years since I first rated this beer. This was the 9th beer I ever rated. Even wackier is that it has been 7 years since I rerated this, probably one of the first beers I rerated. So, this particular bottle has some weird code on it, 10 173 14, no idea what it means. This was one of my first gateway beers. Fortunately, its still pretty damn good. Eh, I wouldn’t say too fresh or too old. Picked it up on clearance for $3.99, can’t pass up such a deal. Strong plum candi sugar, thick sweet black bread and heavy yeastiness. Slight rye character. Flavor is similarly bready and sweet but not as much as the aroma makes you think. Everlasting head on a dark brown body. Nicely felt body but not heavy, evaporates nicely off the palate. Solid beer. 8/4/8/4/16

Sampled draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, Sweden.
Golden coloured with very little head. Vague aroma of honey melon. Sweet and balsamic with big toffee flavour. The mouthfeel is quite sharp, and the finish is clean and full of honey.

Malt and raisin aroma, also some notes like strong black tea from the hops. Dark amber, lace clings to tha glas. Incredibly complex hop taste: A background bitternes like from bitter tea , accompagnied by a range of aromahops which fill the whole spectrum. Medium body, a tad watery exit, but all in all a really lovely beer.

Very dark. Caramel aroma. Malt aroma, but the first beer with a malt aroma I like quite a bit.

Sparkling brown, large dense beige head. Antiseptic aroma and flavor. Possibly a tainted bottle.

Bottled. Golden coloured and slightly hazy with dense, creamy haed. Aroma of fruit and honey. Sweet and malty with nice warming malt character. The finish is sweetish with rather low bitterness. Pleasant, but not overly interesting.

Rerate 6/12/03: A white head and a blond-amber colour, the flavour is spicy and bitter-dry. Beautiful golden color. Rather flat taste, still quite bitter. And all in the end a quite good palate.

Pleasant appearance, frothy head, spicy aroma. Spices, chocolate and malt in the flavor. A bit too much carbonation, but it has a smooth finish.

Rerate: since the Affligem brewery has been bought by Heineken, the beer has become more clear in color, and more sweet in taste. It just lacks the body it used to have. Really too bad. Original rate: 4.2. Beautfiul cloudy redbrown color, big lasting brown head. Aroma of slightly roasted malts, some caramel, fruity of dried fruit like prune, bit chocolate. Sweet taste, malty, slightly alcoholic. Nice full palate.
