Description
The founder of the brewery was a doctor in medicine, Louis Nevejan.

We have recently found papers in the archives stating that the first building dates from 1835 AD. Once it was both a brewery and distillery. The founder died in 1882 and the brewery was sold to Alouis Costenoble. The family brewed for three generations until 1980 when the brewery stopped.

Beer brands included COQ PILS OUD BRUIN & COSMOS. In Esen there were six breweries (all small and part-time) and two distilleries. The actual brewer is doing historical research on West-Flanders breweries since 1900 AD, and has got the 'GOLDEN HAMMER' Trophy, a two yearly award for historic research on breweries. This was attributed by vzw 't Hamerken in Bruges on March 27, 2000 AD

Bottle, thanks berntholer, very big bubbly whipped cream head , clear and quite dark yellow colour, citrus, yeast, dough, a bit of vanila and coconut, mellow medium grapefruit bitterness, light to medium tropical fruit sweetness. Nicely balanced and highly enjoyable.

Obviously the freshest of the three, though not as complex. Seems like everything is there but in developmental stages. Least interesting of the three (as of tonight). Batch XXX

Time for a taste test! This was sweeter yet also more bitter in the finish, compared to the other two. Warming, malty spicy goodness.

Notes from October 2011 2.89/5 rDev -31% look: 2.5 - smell: 3.5 - taste: 3 - feel: 2 - overall: 2.5 Received a bottle of this from a friend. Apparently, I was an incomplete person prior to this experience. We had it on tap, but he swears something was off about it. Bottle is about two years old, give or take 2-3 months. Stored in the fridge for one year. Yeah, I'm lazy. Poured into an Ommegang anniversary glass. An inch of off-white, head sizzles rises & falls in a handful of seconds(though a constant ring of froth remains). Slight, slight gusher. Decent amount of sediment made it's way through as a result. Cloudy, dark, unfiltered cider color/consistency. Starts off smelling of honey, grape must & raisins. Brandy-ish. Some subtle grapefruit/lemon rind. Muddled. Acetone; Hot. Taste is upfront with macerated grape skins & honey. Middle turns quite malty, almost like graham cracker. Combo of slick & grainy textures that the subtle carbonation can't cut through. Oxidation is just peeking through. Slight leafy/vegetable thing on the sugary finish. Not as hot as it smelled. Not in the mood it seems.

33cl bottle on 21st October 2024, Cafe Botteltje in Ostend. Slight haze to the golden pour, lasting white crown. More malts than hops, Belgian yeast coming through too. More boozy than 'subtle'.
