Description
Brewery Het Anker is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium (1471). In its current form the brewery exists since 1872 when the Van Breedam family bought the brewery and built a modern brewery with a steam boiler. Nowadays it is still a family brewery that has been brewing beer in the Groot Begijnhof in Mechelen for 5 generations. Over the years, Het Anker grew into an internationally acclaimed brewery. The old recipes are still the basis of the brewing process and a variety of hops and herbs flavor the beers.
The brewhouse consists of three kettles from 1946 and a wort filter from 2014. The kettles are made of red copper and are “hammered” by hand into the existing shapes. The capacity is 3000 kg deposit. In the past, brews of 250 to 300 hl of lager were produced with this. Today we brew 110 hl per brew since the current beers are of a much higher density.

Poured a nice golden body on top of which perched a medium sized white head that went away fast. The nose is lovely... bubblegum, banana, really perfumey, malt, some coriander. The taste is again fruity, coriander, honey, oranges, apple, candy, yeast... Lovely. Definitely not a by the book triple... Damn I love this brewery.

(Bottle 75 cl) Pours a very pretty, clear mahogany with a warm, reddish hue and a small, beige head. Sweetish, vinous aroma with raspberry accents. Very full body with lots of sweet, dried fruit, berry accents, marzipan and roasted malt. Very sweet - close to cloying. Could do with something to balance the distinct sweetness. But indeed an interesting beer. 181106

A deep red beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma is sweet malty and rather spicy with notes of coriander and violets. The flavor is sweet malty, and again very spicy with violets and vanilla being the strongest, but the flavor also contains notes of oranges, berries, and almond. The end is rounded and soft.

Bottled(330ml). -So far the best Christmas beer that I’ve had. Dark brown coloured, medium sized pale brown head, spicey port like nose. Aroma is nice malty and fruity with great spicy notes and touch of yeast and coriander. Lingering alcohol in the finish.

750ml bottle picked up at Alko in Tampere and sampled at a drinking party in Tromsø. Inviting dark brown red-tinged body with great clarity and a fading off-white foam. Port-like profile. Spicy to the nose. Taste of sweet, dark berries with a yeasty touch towards the end. Almost full bodied. Decent brew, but too much candy sweetness to get a higher score (18.11.2006).

Pours a slightly hazy deep amber into a snifter. Significant tan micro head slowly subsides. Plum and pit fruit aromas. Tangy fruit with full, lasting efervescent bitter finish.
