Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

500ml bottle. Pours very dark amber with a large head. Aroma is bread, slightly sour dried fruits. Sour, dry finish. Great in the mouth, but just nothing to write about on the taste.

Flavour is ligth sweet caramel, dry bitterness, a bit of cardboard, dry malty and hoppy finish with a light fruitiness. Light bodied. Refreshing, but bland.

500ml bottle. Pours amber with a large head. Aroma is malt and some grassy hops. Some malt and hops in there, but not much on the taste. A good bear could be coaxed out of this, but this is nothing special.

This strong Yorkshire ale pours a clear deep copper colour with a beige head that has decent retention and lacing. The nose is banana bread mixed in with roasted malt and mild caramel. The mouthfeel is pretty watery with a little stickiness. Nice roasted malt flavour with a dry and bitter (but not too much) finish. A good darker strong ale, from a brewery I always enjoy.

2nd May 2010. On tap at pub somewhere in Essex! Gold beer with a light haze. Light semi dry palate. Fresh and fruity. Zesty orange with a trace of tea. A litte grapefruit on the back of the tongue. Not bad at all. Refreshing and very drinkable.

Bottle (12 oz, finally.) Pours a very clear medium amber with little head. Aromas are apple juice concentrate with a very grainy backdrop. Flavor is decent, but pretty uninteresting. Not a lot of uniqueness to it... caramel/apple juice combination with a bit of herbal hops and a very malty grain flavor in the finish. Pretty disappointing, really. I expected more of a witch flavor.
