Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

Bottle: a rich clear chestnut colour with a thick and creamy caramel coloured head; a bitter aroma with traces of coffee and boiled cabbage; thinner in the mouth than expected, with roast malt flavours and then a strong bitter burnt aftertaste. A pwerful beer that makes its presence felt, but rather one-dimensional.

Very dark bitter ale. Very british. Drank this while walking by Buckingham palace from a pint bottle. It might be a little bit too bitter for me, but still excellent. Not quite a black sheep amongst british beers, but still worth drinking. Also has a higher alcohol content than most British beers do.

Hazy amber color. Earthy malt aroma. Fresh malt taste, easily drinkable, caramel, with a precise apple character, ending with a bold bitterness.

Half on cask. Dark golden coloured with brilliant clarity. Filmy white layer of foam. Fruity aroma. Light caramel in flavour with notes of dried fruit (apricot) and with a moderate bitter end. Well made beer (served at perfect temperature at the wonderful Harp pub in Covent Garden 18.09.2006).

Bottle: Aroma of hops, hops and then more hops, pours a bright amber with lively carbonation and a short lasting beige head. Taste is crisp with sweet malts rapidly replaced with bitterness, and then a long lasting, pleasant, bitter aftertaste. Excellent.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 30 Sep) Amber colour with off-white head. Fruity nose with a nice earthy hop aroma (lots of Goldings character). Fruity, rather bitter, taste with a nice earthy hop character. I usually get a bit disappointed with English bottled beers, they tend not to match the cask conditioned versions, but this was a nice surprise. Nice bitter/hoppy character.
