Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

(Cask at Lion Tavern, Liverpool, 24 July) Colour is amber with frothy head. Nose is malty, fruity with dark fruit and some earthy hops. Taste is malty and fruity with hints of dried apricots and a well balanced bitter finish with some earthy/dusty hops. A good session bitter.

500ml bottle. This started well and then I got bored of it. Chestnut beer with thin beige head. Nice fruit/yeasty aroma. Bit of empty boiled sweet flavour in mouth. Raspberry fruit and caramel flavours are nice. But then it’s empty, filtered and pasteurised and lacking any depth.

[Bottled at East End Brewery, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong] Brownish amber, clear, firm head. Pleasant mangoish hop aroma. Dryish with clean mouthfeel Pleasant biscuity malt flavour. The moutfheel is short and quickly replaced by grassy bitterness with a touch of sulphur. Unadventurous, but well crafted.

[Bottled at East End Brewery, Quarry Bay, Hong Kong] Amber coloured, small fluffy head. Sweetish with evident carmelly malt and some hay-like hops. Fairly light bodied with soft mouthfeel and careful salty bitterness. Not as mad as you might think...

Bottled. Weak, lightly malty aroma, with some hops and a little metallic note. Almost copper-colored with a nice off-white head. Clear. Malty and bready up front, with hops and some caramel coming shortly after. Nice body and a finish with bitterness and a touch of sweetness. Pleasant, but a little too anonymous. (060525)

Cask at the Wharf, Aalborg, DK. Chestnut colored, with almost no head, just some off-white bubbles. The aroma is lightly roasted and has caramel too. Malty-sweet and bitter flavor, with the bitterness escalating towards the finish. Some roastiness also comes through at the end. Medium body. (060506)
