Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

440ml can. Poured a clear medium brown colour with a short-lived, frothy off-white head and some clingy lace. The aroma is light roasted malt, light peanut butter. The flavour is moderate to light liqourice bitter, with a light, somewhat watery, dry, roasty, herbal, earthy, floral, liqourice bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with average to soft carbonation.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from Waitrose. Pours clear gold with a small, frothy white head. Lightly sweet with soft tangerine rind notes, bready malts, some piney-grassy bitterness. Light bodied with fine to average carbonation. Semi-sweet finish, bit more pine and citrus. Easygoing and drinkable.

[50cl bottle from Waitrose, Bracknell.] A bright pale amber pour with no head and gentle carbonation; malty aroma with a little citrus; sharp herbal bitterness with some nettle and burdock and some caramel malts; then more assertive herbal hops to finish. A pleasant bitter.

Bottle at home, thanks to Dave over the road, 26/05/23. Chestnut brown with a decent beige cap. Nose is biscuit, toffee, dried fruit rinds, dark malts. Taste comprises brown bread, grains, biscuit, toffee, dates, fruit cake mix. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Not bad if perhaps lacking some depth to the flavour.

Bottle as “Sainsbury’s Yorkshire Bitter”. Smooth mild beginning. Slightly grainy. Very dry, bitter, caramel. I miss the Ale aromatic, dry bitter in the finish, dense dry. Nice.
