Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

500ml bottle. Poured a hazy medium amber colour with a short-lived frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, a little yeasty, woody hop. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a smooth, slightly watery, woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

Can. Nose is vanilla sweets, synthetic vanilla, pineapple sweets, very artificial. Taste is vanilla flavouring, vanilla sweets, painfully thin pineapple, light malt. Despicable: it'sworst beer I've had in years and a complete drain pour. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

(Cask at The Flying Horse, London, Oxford Street, as Black Sheep Pale Ale, 20191015) The beer poured amber and clear. Its head was small, white and it lasted long. Aroma had grass, earth and malts. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were grass, earth, malts, toffee and bitterness. Aftertaste was so spicy, malty and bitter. A nice hoppy pale ale.
