(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Amber colour with brief off-white head. Fruity, very hoppy nose with notes of grapefruit, pine or spruce needles and resin. Fruity, hoppy taste with spruce needles, resin and dried fruit. The malty sweetness balances the impressive amounts of hops in the finish (153 IBU!). Very well balanced. Brilliant beer!

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Nut brown, almost no head. Aroma of black currant and bubblegum. Sweet and thick with hard mouthfeel. Some syrup and salt mixes with black currant juice. Long piney bitterness. An unusual barley wine.

Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Clear pale amber, minimal head. Strong lychee-like hop aroma. Sweet and full bodied with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Thick and dominated by soapy, perfumy, juicy citric hops. Punishing almost inky bitterness. Lots of flavours, but more rough than harmonious or complex.

(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Orange colour with small white head. Fruity nose with notes of apricots and fresh hops (dry hopped?). Fruity, hoppy taste with notes of grapefruit, apricots, pine needles and resin. Seriously hoppy, but rather one dimensional. Some alcohol sweetness. Very hoppy, but, as stated, rather one dimensional.

Hmm, a pretty mellow IIPA. Restrained hoppy aroma was straighforwardly citric, without much malt, but I’d call it bready and perhaps honeyish. Flavor is well rounded with a bready honey malt, some citrus resiny hops, and not very bitter. Malts rounded out the palate, although simply so. Dark golden-amber color with medium head.

I’m not really sure that using some of the most rare and expensive coffee beans is really necessary in brewing a coffee stout. Pours a pretty dark black-brown with a thin creamy tan head. Aroma is dominated by dark strong coffee with a syrupy caramel note. Flavor is 2-dimensional: malty caramelly sweet and roasty strong coffee. Not much else going on. The malts are a tad astringent, with some apparent alcohol in the finish. I’d say its neverthless well masked for 12%. It still pretty strong and boozy and 6oz was enough.

Now this has a really nice hoppy nose on it, piney and resiny with a nice spiciness that reminds me of hallertauer. Really nice clear golden color with a firm one finger bright white head. Spicy hops dominate the flavor, but there’s a honeyed malt in there. Unfortunately the malts thin out toward the finish, leaving it unbalanced toward the bitter hoppiness. Man, I love the smell of this.

Poured a deep, opaque, oily black with a fast fading tan head. Smells of roasted malt, grain, chocolate and a hint of coffee, but not too much. Initial flavor is rather mixed, very oily and spicy on the tongue with heavy alcohol and also bitter. Finish is really good though, transforms on the tongue. Starts out with a heavy coffee flavor but then transitions into the strong, grainy, imperial stout flavor that one would expect. Tough call with these specialty beers, but this is worth a look.

On tap at the Mad Mex in Robinson. The pour is a ubiquitous pale yellow american beer color. The aroma is a little sour and vinegary, but not much. Taste is somewhat like a mild IPA. Seems to have a little bit of alky bite during the session, more than the 5% listed here. Mild carbonation that at least lets you know it is a beer but almost flat. The finish is mildly hoppy and malty at the same time and is of medium length. Not too much lasting bitterness. About the same as any other pale ale I’ve had such as Sly Fox Phoenix Pale Ale, Hereford & Hops Allegheny Pale Ale, Flying Dog Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale or JW Dundees American Pale Ale . Not quite as good as Erie’s Hard Cock Ale, but I think Hard Cock may be categorized in the wrong style on this site.

Amber color. Some nice hop aroma. Good malt taste, even if the body has a medium strength, with a lot of light caramel and good hops; and of course a strong bitterness. A good American interpretation.
