Description
It all started in 1986. Sure, many things have changed since the early days of Harpoon, but much has stayed the same. We still love brewing beer and enjoying it with friends.
In July 2014, Harpoon became an employee owned company, with 48% of the company given to employees through the establishment of an ESOP. An E-what? ESOP stands for Employee Stock Ownership Plan. It is a mechanism by which a company contributes to its employees’ retirement by allocating shares to them which it repurchases…..yadda, yadda, yadda… Here’s what it means: we are employee owned, we are an independent craft brewer, and you bet we’re damn proud of it.
In 2024, Harpoon and Smuttynose merged, forming Barrel One Collective.

Pours yellow hazy with a thin white head. Aroma of pineapple and tropical fruits. Taste has mild pine resin, heavy citrus, loads of citrus and tropical fruit notes. Palate has typical citra elements. Quite good.

From a can it pours clear pale and it has a somewhat artificial nose to it, an almost repulsively sweet olfactory. Whew. Taste is somewhat the same, weird artificial dull fruit feel to it, not good. Good thing it has some decent carbonation, or I would have to drain pour this stuff. Yea, its a tick, but I'd never buy this stuff again, blah.

Blue & pick can off the dollar rack. Nose of fruit perfumey fruit candle wax. Initially clear pale pour with a big frothy white foamy head. However, when I get to the end of the can its cloudy. Taste is certainly IPA but it smooth a little with good cutting level of co2 and the fruit. Yes, in the middle you do get the IPA bitterness but it is not as lasting after each gulp, it fades rather quickly. That guava is quite up front and as I near the finish its kindah getting in my face and rather annoying. It almost starts to get an artificial attitude about it. Maybe its just the fact that its IPA with bitterness that's bugging me. Yes, on the finish, I cannot forget its an IPA although this stuff almost had me fooled that it was a mild APA at first. I know its styled as an IPA but its really a fruit beer of sorts. Oh well, there you have it.

Pours hazy gold into a shaker. Bright white soapy head with good retention recedes leaving scant lacing. Mango, kumquat and tangerine aromas. Soft with lemon joy and tangerine pith front to back. Medium length earthy pine and pith finish. Might be better fresh. Purchased a 3 month old can at the Harpoon brewery... I guess you have to check dates everywhere!

Pours slightly hazed deep gold into a tulip. White head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Pineapple now and later aromas. Medium bodied with sweet pineapple syrup and rind upfront turning to tart lacto before the medium length upside down cake finish.
