Description
It all started in 1986. Sure, many things have changed since the early days of Harpoon, but much has stayed the same. We still love brewing beer and enjoying it with friends.

In July 2014, Harpoon became an employee owned company, with 48% of the company given to employees through the establishment of an ESOP. An E-what? ESOP stands for Employee Stock Ownership Plan. It is a mechanism by which a company contributes to its employees’ retirement by allocating shares to them which it repurchases…..yadda, yadda, yadda… Here’s what it means: we are employee owned, we are an independent craft brewer, and you bet we’re damn proud of it.

In 2024, Harpoon and Smuttynose merged, forming Barrel One Collective.

Can, from Costco, LIC. Pours clear dark brown with copper highlights and a small frothy beige head that flops down fast, sweet chocolate bun aroma, low carbonation, mildly sweet mocha taste with doughy flavor with alcohol undertones, thin smooth body, long finish. Very smooth and tasty.

2022 vintage, 16% ABV. Quite the behemoth, but lacking the viscosity you’d expect in an imperial stout this big. Boozy as hell, though. Very bitter, as if it spent a little too longin those rye barrels, plus with generous RIS hopping and rye spiciness. Never reaches the chocolate-anise-soy depths you want in a giant stout. Mainly booze and bitterness. Interesting to see a beer this big from Harpoon, but they do imperial stouts about as good as they do anything else.

12 oz. can from Total Wine. Pours a cloudy gold color with a small khaki head and poor retention. Zero lacing. Light citrus aroma. Semi-tart orange flavor in a weak base wheat beer with a slight yeast/bread finish. More of a fruit beer than a wheat ale. Medium-light body. Thin body. Low carbonation. No bitterness. Drinkable, but I was expecting better.
