Description
Hogs Back Brewery was founded in 1992 in Tongham, and bought by current owner Rupert Thompson in 2012. In 2014, Hogs Back planted its own hop field on land adjacent to the brewery, bringing the traditional but near-extinct White Bine hop variety back to its Surrey home.

We’re a small family-owned brewery tucked away in the village of Tongham, in the heart of the old Surrey hop-growing region. Still an independently owned brewery, Hogs Back owe much of their success to their iconic, flagship real ale 'TEA' (Traditional English Ale) - a firm favourite of cask-conditioned real ale drinkers throughout the UK and a multi-award winning brew year-in, year-out.

Cask at Moon Under Water, Wolverhampton. Pours “bitter brown” with a small off-white head. The aroma is just traces of autumn fruits and nuts. In the mouth it is basically bitter but with some underlying sweetness and somewhat watery. Flavour is provided by traditional hops and marmalade with hints of spice and herbs, Bitterness lasts into the finish. This is quite reasonable.

Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours golden yellow with a small off-white head and good lacing. Malts and floral hops vie for attention in the aroma. In the mouth it starts off briefly sweet and juicy, but some underlying bitterness is soon detected, and this quickly increases. Floral hops, marmalade and tropical fruits plus hints of mango and kiwi. Finish is quite bitter and slightly dry. It’s reasonable.

Cask @ Regal Moon, Rochdale. Clear copper-amber with a creamy head. Malty effort with some subduing hoppy notes, and a smooth tasting texture.

Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol October 2023. Chestnut brown in colour, with a slight, off-white, head. Bready malts, ripe berry fruits, some brown sugar before a gently bitter finish. Good.

Clear amber pour with a decent white head. Aromas of fruit (sweet citrus), malt and some flowers - taste quite similar. Decent IPA.

Golden with white head that soon dissipates. A - floral, melon bit of stone fruit and pine F - bready malt, oranges with marmalade bitterness in the finish. Could use a bit more malt body for me but It's a nice, easy drinking if nothing outstanding.
