Description
The history of the brewery dates back to 1679. At the end of the eighteenth century, Jacobus Liefmans settled in Oudenaarde and gave the brewery its name. It was around 1900 that Liefmans started filling maturation tanks with black cherries, on a small scale. Local farmers brought their excess crops of black cherries to Liefmans and swapped them for beer. One individual who played a key part in this was Rosa Merckx. She was closely involved in the brewery’s operations over several decades. Thanks to her encouragement, the cherry beer evolved into a real success story.

14/X/20 - 25cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker), shared @ home, BB: IX/2020 (2020-970)

Clear ruby pink red beer, small to no head, a few pink bubbles that’s all, non adhesive, unstable. Aroma: all artificial flavoured candy, cherry bubble gum, raspberry jam, very sugary impression. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sugary, lemonade, raspberry jam, soft acidity, way too sugary and sweet, all artificial flavourings as well. Aftertaste: sugary, jam, soft acidity, red fruits flavoured candy (strawberry and raspberry flavourings). It is what it is, I guess. A pink kiddies lemonade...

0.25 l bottle from 'Homberg's große Bierwelt', best before August 2021. Clear, ruby with a medium large, foamy, almost stable, pinkish head. Intensely sweetish, sugary, quite fruity and a bit artificial aroma of sherbet powder, raspberry, redcurrant and some elderberry. Very sweet, a little sourish, fairly fruity and minimally artificial taste of sherbet powder, gummy bear, raspberry and some elderberry, followed by a short, a little tart, rather sugary finish. Thin body, minimally astringent and quite effervescent mouthfeel, average to lively carbonation. Drinkable but way too sweet, even a bit artificial, not even refreshing. A joke.
