Description
Our craft beers are contemporary yet rooted in history and inspired by classic types of beer. You can taste the history of prison town Veenhuizen in our beers. The Maallust beers are artisanal, authentic and brewed with only the very best ingredients. Whether it’s our hoppy blonde Weldoener or the treacherously smooth tripel Zware Jongen; Maallust beers are full of character.
Maallust was founded in 2011. It was initiated by a group of 25 entrepeneurs who call themselves the ‘Zware Jongens’ (Heavy Guys). They not only started brewing in Veenhuizen, they also revived the dilapidated Maallust complex. After a thorough renovation, the brewery opened its doors. Today, the Maallust complex looks marvelous, and its beer is available all throughout the Netherlands. Maallust is the perfect addition to a village with a unique history.

Helder oranje rood bier met een medium witte schuimkraag. Het heeft een fruitige wat kruidige geur. De smaak is fruitig, mango achtig met een peperige afdronk.

Huge thanks to Erzengel for sharing this one! Bottle looks simple but really good. Beer in the glass dark black, huge head. Fine roasty-spicy aroma. Starts intense malty, notes of liquorice, wood, some bitter chocolate. Well balanced finish, warming malty, still with fine notes of liquorice. Nice one!

'Dubbel' by this rather quiet but reliable brewery in the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands, shared with Craftmember. Medium thick, frothy, pale greyish beige, membrane-lacing, mousy head on a crystal clear bronze-mahogany brown beer with coppery tinge, turning hazy with sediment. Aroma of cocoa powder, old gingerbread, date wine, dried peach, ground hazelnuts, brown bread, nutmeg, prunes, tea, toffee, pear. Sweetish but remarkably clean onset, some fig and prune notes, hint of baked banana, medium carbonation, vague sourish undertone; smooth mouthfeel, hazelnutty and bit milk-chocolatey maltiness, very slightly toasty-bitter here and there with a tea-ish herbal hop bitterish tail even though most of the 'finishing' bitterness comes from the malts; light powderiness and dried fruit notes linger. Interesting: I expected a Belgian style 'abbey' dubbel, but what I got, is a much more generic, less yeasty and much more malt-forward ale that bears many more resemblances with Anglo-Saxon style brown ales than Belgian dubbels. Not bad in that sense, but underachieving a bit compared with other Maallust beers I had before.

Bottle brought back from the brewery - thanks, mom & dad! Pours hazy dark brown with a quickly thinning, frothy, tan head. Aroma of malt, yeast, wort, burnt caramel, candied banana & plum, red apple. Taste is medium malty sweet, lots of wort, yeast, caramel & burnt sugar, some candied fruit, an edge of toas & bitterish green tea. Malty finish, slightly herbal hoppy, lingering candied fruit & sugar, sweet yeast, warming liqueur-like alcohol. Medium body, oily-syrupy texture, fizzy carbonation. Expected more judging by the ratings here.. bad batch maybe? Would try again, though.

Huge thanks to Erzengel for sharing! Bottle looks simple but good. Beer in the glass zippy, nice head. Fresh hoppy aroma. Starts fine malty, spicy, some herbal-floral notes. Light sourish. Finish malty-spicy. Could be a bit more balanced. But interesting one!

On tap at De Drie Dorstige Herten, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out candied sugar, Belgian yeast, and floral notes. Flavour is along the same lines, with candied sugar, Belgian yeast, and fruity esters. Not particularly well-constructed, with plenty of estery notes. Not bad.

Bottle brought back from the brewery - thanks, mom & dad! Pours hazy ochre with a quickly thinning, frothy, white head. Aroma of clove, pepper, wheat, apple peel, banana, honey. Taste is light fruity sweet, ripe apple & rather subtle banana over bready & honey malts, quite bitter spices pairing with sourish wheat (invigorated by the carbonation) & a herbal touch. Dry, spicy, grassy hoppy finish, more wheat & dried apple peel. Medium body, slick texture, lively carbonation. To be preferred over the industrial Dutch Hefeweizens... but not much more.
