Description
Our craft beers are contemporary yet rooted in history and inspired by classic types of beer. You can taste the history of prison town Veenhuizen in our beers. The Maallust beers are artisanal, authentic and brewed with only the very best ingredients. Whether it’s our hoppy blonde Weldoener or the treacherously smooth tripel Zware Jongen; Maallust beers are full of character.

Maallust was founded in 2011. It was initiated by a group of 25 entrepeneurs who call themselves the ‘Zware Jongens’ (Heavy Guys). They not only started brewing in Veenhuizen, they also revived the dilapidated Maallust complex. After a thorough renovation, the brewery opened its doors. Today, the Maallust complex looks marvelous, and its beer is available all throughout the Netherlands. Maallust is the perfect addition to a village with a unique history.

Bottle. Color: Dark murky brown, beige head. Aroma: Caramel, dark fruit, boozy, herbal. Taste: Dark malt and some roasted malt, sugary, molasses, caramel, dark fruit. Medium sweet and moderate to medium hopbitter. Hints of nuts and blueberry. Boozy notes. Bittery palate at finish. Light herbal hints. Sirupy. Over medium to full body, just below average carbonation. Very nice one, although a bit on the sweet side.

Bottle brought back from the brewery - thanks, mom & dad! Pours hazy dark golden with a lasting, small, foamy, white head; some lacing. Aroma of bread, rye, wheat, apple peel, tangerine. Taste is light fruity sweet, notes of 'classic' apple & pear, a bit estery, resting on a thick 'real' breadiness & yeast, with accents of bitter rye, grass, sourish zest & wheat. Dry, yeasty, hoppy finish, slightly earthy, lingering rye & bread. Medium body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. I can get the intention and the execution isn't bad, but to me this feels too 'raw' & basic.

Bottle brought back from the brewery - thanks, mom & dad! Pours hazy brown with a lasting, small, foamy, tan head. Aroma of liquorice, caramel, red & green apple, pear, tea leaves, toast, peanut, raisin. Taste is medium fruity sweet, offering ripe pear, dried banana & apple, sourish touch connecting it to malty liquorice, caramel & bread with a herbal bitterness of tea, toast, bark & nuts underneath. Dry, herbal hoppy finish, bit spicy, phenolic, more liquorice & pear. Medium body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. Unusual accents for a Dubbel but certainly interesting & worth the try.
