Description
Our craft beers are contemporary yet rooted in history and inspired by classic types of beer. You can taste the history of prison town Veenhuizen in our beers. The Maallust beers are artisanal, authentic and brewed with only the very best ingredients. Whether it’s our hoppy blonde Weldoener or the treacherously smooth tripel Zware Jongen; Maallust beers are full of character.

Maallust was founded in 2011. It was initiated by a group of 25 entrepeneurs who call themselves the ‘Zware Jongens’ (Heavy Guys). They not only started brewing in Veenhuizen, they also revived the dilapidated Maallust complex. After a thorough renovation, the brewery opened its doors. Today, the Maallust complex looks marvelous, and its beer is available all throughout the Netherlands. Maallust is the perfect addition to a village with a unique history.

Bottle. Golden pour. Aroma of yeast esters, malt, coriander, wheat and orange peel. Taste has fresh wheat, yeast esters, orange peel, coriander and a little bitter grassy hop. If I had to guess, I would say this is a witbier. Allright.

Oranjegeel bier met schuim. Smaak is zoet en ietwat kruidig met iets van abrikoos, zuurtjes en kandij. Fijne hop bitterheid die het geheel afmaakt.

Bottle brought back from the brewery - thanks, mom & dad! Pours clear dark golden with a stable, small, foamy, off-white head. Aroma of ripe orange, apricot, banana peel, wet pepper, turnip, glue, vague mint. Taste has sweet banana, orange & apricot, residual white sugar in the back, a bit weirdly glueish; bitter pepper, herbs & yeast for balance. Dry, grassy hoppy finish, fruity yeast & spices with warming jenever-like alcohol, a bit too strong. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Some unpleasant aspects here and there.

Bottle brought back from the brewery - thanks, mum & dad! Pours hazy amber with a thin, off-white head. Aroma & taste have brioche & caramel malt, plum, red apple, sourish red berries underneath, a bit herbal bitter. Lingering caramel maltiness in the finish, herbal & even earthy hoppy in the very end, good for balance. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Likeable Vienna.

Bottle brought back from the brewery - thanks, mum & dad! Pours hazy dark golden-orange with a small, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of toffee, biscuit, cake, brioche, orange peel, green tea, iron. Taste has sweet toffee & mandarin in cake-like maltiness; bitter tea accent, slightly nutty, tad metallic even. Dry, grassy hoppy finish, herbal & sugary tea-like, lingering toffee. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Nice balance between herbal & toffee profile.

Helder oranje rood bier met een medium witte schuimkraag. Het heeft een fruitige wat kruidige geur. De smaak is fruitig, mango achtig met een peperige afdronk.

Huge thanks to Erzengel for sharing this one! Bottle looks simple but really good. Beer in the glass dark black, huge head. Fine roasty-spicy aroma. Starts intense malty, notes of liquorice, wood, some bitter chocolate. Well balanced finish, warming malty, still with fine notes of liquorice. Nice one!

'Dubbel' by this rather quiet but reliable brewery in the province of Drenthe in the Netherlands, shared with Craftmember. Medium thick, frothy, pale greyish beige, membrane-lacing, mousy head on a crystal clear bronze-mahogany brown beer with coppery tinge, turning hazy with sediment. Aroma of cocoa powder, old gingerbread, date wine, dried peach, ground hazelnuts, brown bread, nutmeg, prunes, tea, toffee, pear. Sweetish but remarkably clean onset, some fig and prune notes, hint of baked banana, medium carbonation, vague sourish undertone; smooth mouthfeel, hazelnutty and bit milk-chocolatey maltiness, very slightly toasty-bitter here and there with a tea-ish herbal hop bitterish tail even though most of the 'finishing' bitterness comes from the malts; light powderiness and dried fruit notes linger. Interesting: I expected a Belgian style 'abbey' dubbel, but what I got, is a much more generic, less yeasty and much more malt-forward ale that bears many more resemblances with Anglo-Saxon style brown ales than Belgian dubbels. Not bad in that sense, but underachieving a bit compared with other Maallust beers I had before.
