Description
Epic ales to celebrate legendary Dwarfen deeds! The Fownes Brewing Company was started in 2012 to bring a fresh breed of outstanding ales and porters to the good folk of the Black Country. In the seven years since we rolled the first cask out of the brewery doors we've gone from strength to strength, picking up awards and recognition on a regional and national scale. In the autumn of 2019 we took the bold stride to relocate the brewery deeper into the heart of the Black Country, so that we could forge our next chapter and expand our ability to bring our unique, epic ales to a wider audience than ever before.

500ml bottle from brewery @ 8%. Look - murky mahogany, small off white cap, nice retention. Nose - biscuit malts, citrus notes, stewed tropical fruits but undefined. Taste - biscuit malts, some spice, stewed citrus and tropical fruit. Moderate bitterness with spice and a sweet tang to finish which helps give it a lightness. Palate - medium to full bodied, soft carbonation. Overall - my interpretation is this is an Imperial IPA rather than a double hopped IPA particularly with the malt focus. However, its balanced, there is a nice bite to this beer and I found it very enjoyable.

Cask at Wellington, Birmingham. Black with small beige head and good lacing. Dark roasted malts, coffee, cocoa dusting, liquorice, slight tang and bitter in finish. A rich drying porter. Decent but would have preferred some softer notes in there.

Cask at the Wellington, Brum. Its been ages since I have had a Fownes beer and this one had their classic grainy but moreish malt and hoppy bitterness which is always a winner in my book. Notes of toffee, citrus pith, zesty and herbal bitter kick. Medium bodied, slick but drying.

Cask at Wellington, Birmingham. Pours black with small beige head. This one had notes of chocolate, roasted malt, lactose, some berries, a bit dusty. Smooth with a soft carbonation. Good.

Bottle from Hop Vault, Stourbridge, online. Pours a clear amber with moderate sized foamy white head, nice retention and lacing. Aroma is quite subtle although I have picked up a cold so could be that. Stone fruits, light floral notes and spice, some caramel maltiness. Taste has a really nice sessionability about it, nice soft malts, maybe picking up a bit more citrus through the hops, definitely spice in the finish which I like. Lovely smoothness and soft carbonation. Yep a good'en.
