Description
Kalamazoo's 1st Brewpub!

Welcome to Olde Peninsula Brewpub and Restaurant, Kalamazoo's first Brewpub, opened on St. Patrick's Day in 1996. Previously known as the "Big Corner," this three story structure was built by Nicholas Bauman in 1874 as the Peninsula Restaurant.

This elegant restaurant gave way to the Franklin and Folz clothing store from 1884 to 1924. Through the years, the building housed a succession of business, including the Kalamazoo Stove Company, a book bindery, and a hotel. It became the headquarters for W.R. Biggs/Gilmore Agency in 1973. Severely damaged by the 1980 tornado, the building was completely rehabilitated in 1980-81. The current owners, Marie and Steve Blinn, wish to bring back a piece of history for all of Kalamazoo to enjoy. We are proud to offer the freshest beer available, brewed on-site in our 7-barrel Brewhouse. On behalf of all of our staff, we hope you relax and enjoy your experience at Olde Peninsula.

Reviewed from notes.
The appearance was a bright golden yellow color with a quarter finger’s worth of white foamy head that slid off really quick. No lace.
The aroma had some white bread, light grassy sweetness, some cereal grains, and ended with a light herbal quality about it.
The flavor leaned towards the sweet side and had a little bit of corn sweetness. Light biscuits came in to blend fairly nice. Aftertaste rolled into the blend of corn, cereals and biscuits. Not much of a finish, but somewhat sweet.
The feel was between light and medium bodied with a crisp sessionably smooth lingering sweetness touching my tongue pretty clean and nice. Carbonation felt mild but good. ABV felt as appropriate.
Overall, worthy beer to have again, preferably in the warmer months.

The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a finger’s worth of white foamy to fizzy head. Quickly died off to leave barely any lace.
The aroma centered around some light portions of sweet cracker, vanilla, cereal sweet grains, ginger, cinnamon, allspice and a blend of dark to milk chocolate.
The flavor had a decent blend of the spices to the chocolate portions. Cracker-like sweetness seemed to escape a bit more than expected to leave a spicy to semi-sweet aftertaste. Not much of a finish.
The feel was about medium bodied with a decent sipping quality about it. Spices do leave a little bit of harshness rolling over my tongue. Carbonation felt fine and the ABV as well.
Overall, I know it’s a Winter seasonal that brags that it will make you feel \"comfortable on [a] chilly winter evening\" but part of me wants to say: though the ABV felt as projected by the brewer, I wouldn’t mind a bit more ABV in this one just to let one \"set sail into the night.\"

The appearance was a dark brown color with a slight tan foamy head that didn’t leave much lace.
The aroma had some smoke/ash with a heavy dose of dark chocolate and ended with a little bit of maple. Light toast.
The flavor had some of the same as the aroma with some caramel malts making a decent play here. Light ashy/char aftertaste with a dry sort of finish.
The feel was about medium bodied, perhaps just a touch under with a fair sessionability about it. Good carbonation. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, pretty good porter worthy of coming back to.
