Description
Kalamazoo's 1st Brewpub!

Welcome to Olde Peninsula Brewpub and Restaurant, Kalamazoo's first Brewpub, opened on St. Patrick's Day in 1996. Previously known as the "Big Corner," this three story structure was built by Nicholas Bauman in 1874 as the Peninsula Restaurant.

This elegant restaurant gave way to the Franklin and Folz clothing store from 1884 to 1924. Through the years, the building housed a succession of business, including the Kalamazoo Stove Company, a book bindery, and a hotel. It became the headquarters for W.R. Biggs/Gilmore Agency in 1973. Severely damaged by the 1980 tornado, the building was completely rehabilitated in 1980-81. The current owners, Marie and Steve Blinn, wish to bring back a piece of history for all of Kalamazoo to enjoy. We are proud to offer the freshest beer available, brewed on-site in our 7-barrel Brewhouse. On behalf of all of our staff, we hope you relax and enjoy your experience at Olde Peninsula.

On tap at the brewpub/restaurant. Murky orange-brown body, medium off-white head. Cerealy, light aroma with hints of caramel. Served cold, which masks much of the flavor profile. Thankfully, as this beer warms, rich layers of caramel, Cheerios, dark fruits, and grassy, bitter hops develop. Light bitter finish. A pleasant beer in all respects.

On tap at the brewery/restaurant. Cloudy yellow body, thin off-white head. Banana and clove notes dominate both the aroma and the flavor, which I don’t mind. Rather refreshing and light. One-dimensional but quaffable.

On tap at Olde Peninsula. Deep murky red-brown body, thin-medium tight light tan head. Intensely winey, berry-like sweet body, boozy, with abundant citric hops in both the nose and flavor. Alcohol is warming but pairs nicely with the candied fruits and caramel. Reminds me a bit of Founders Devil Dancer but sweeter and a bit less rindy. More of a barleywine than a double IPA with the huge malt backbone, but I’m certainly not complaining.

2003 draught. Dark black pour with a small beige head, quite fleeting. Aroma of licorice, black malt and dark roast. Quite bitter and dark, with a good roasty, almost salty flavor. Flavor was great, but the body was only medium with a bit too much carbonation. I like chewier porters. Not dominated by hops, so that was nice.

Deep and black, small tan head, little lacing. Faint aroma of barley roast and some sweeter scents as well. Medium to light body. After spending all night drinking eccentric ale, batch 6000 and harvest ale at Bell's it's tough for anything to compare, but this wasnt bad. Good representation of the style. Some thick, chewy roast and alcohol on the finish.
