Description
It seems simple.
Water. Yeast. Grains. Hops. That’s all it takes to make beer. But what we do with those simple ingredients within these walls is what makes us special.
Foothills began brewing beer at our West 4th Street location in March 2005, with three 15-barrel fermenters. Jamie and his brewers managed to crank out 800 barrels of beer that year, and doubled that output the following year.
As demand and production continued to increase, the need became obvious for more space. The solution came in the form of a 48,000 square foot warehouse a few miles away, an old manila envelope factory that was retro-fitted with brewing equipment and became Foothills’ main production facility, located at 3800 Kimwell Drive.
Today both brewery locations continue to produce our top-quality beers. We offer weekend tours from our tasting room at our main brewing facility. Conversely, if you ask nicely at the downtown brewpub, you can probably get a peek at the operation.

10oz pour at Busy Bee Cafe in Raleigh. Translucent nut brown with some creamy off white head. Wooooo. Big nose. Smells like Jim Beam, toffee, vanilla, sour mash whiskey. Flavor is the same. Tastes like they dropped a shot of whiskey in my brown ale. Must have been an extremely wet barrel. Flavors of caramel, coconut, vanilla, brown sugar, cherry, slightly medicinal. full bodied, boozy finish.

Bomber from Beer Run. Pours a clear pale amber color with a medium sized white head. Good head retention. Aroma of toasted caramel malts and herbal, floral hops. The taste is raw malt, earthy, vegetal and minty hops. Medium bodied, lingering hop bitterness, average carbonation. Decent.

Draft. Deep brown body with a tan head, rapidly diminishing. Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate, molasses and cola. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Thin to medium body, watery texture and moderate carbonation. Taste of bittersweet chocolate and coffee with a hint of grapefruit bitterness. It’s noticeably thin, but its strength is in its balance between sweet and bitter and the nice flavors the balance produces.

Bottle. Opaque, black liquid with minmal mocca, tan head. Aroma of grassy hops, chocolate, coffee, toffee, vanilla, boozy, licorice, toasty, biscuity malt, pine and bread. Taste is dry and medium bitter with notes of chocolate and coffee. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. A bit bland, sadly. Not worth the hype.

Poured at SAVOR. Poured a near black with some ruby hues on the edge of the glass, tan head. Aroma was bourbon, woody, vanilla, with touch of sweetness. Flavor had a nice woody vanilla note, with a solid bourbon note. Pretty enjoyable.
