Description
De Halve Maan Brewing Company is a family brewery in the heart of Bruges, Belgium. The brewery was restarted and refined by Veronique Maes in 2005. With unique beer recipe on the work, the brewery was renamed as ‘Brugse Zot’. Brugse Zot beer became the only beer that is personally brewed in the town center of Bruges. The Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik beers are two of the brewery’s finest types of beers. Straffe Hendrik beer is filled with bitter ale while the Brugse Zot is rich in fruity flavor along with different types of malts and hoppy aromas.

On tap at the brewery in Brugge: Served in a trappist glass with a good 1 ½ inch of head with good retention. Aroma is very interesting with some sweet notes mix with a nice choice of malt. It seems that the beers from this brewery are way more interesting when drank freshly from the tap then when they are bottled and sent overseas.

Small head that laced the glass nicely. Clear amber color with an aroma of alcohol, wine and new heavy leather. Light body and soft carbonation. Nothing bad here but not much going on either.

Bottled 1998. This pours a deep ruby brown with a quickly fading head. Carbonation is low. The aroma is like a barleywine. Flavor is smooth malt caramel and alcohol. Could be a little more robust. Probably at it's peak.

3 years old, corked bottle
Beautiful red-amber color. Nice spicy and malty aroma, good full malty flavor; caramel; sweet. The keyword is FULL. Not complex but satisfying: I like it!

Bottle – Poured a light blond beer with a nice bubbly head. Aroma is sweet with a nice mix of malt and hops. Great carbonation with a medium body and I also noticed quite a lot of sediment at the bottom. Taste has a good mix of spices with a subtle bitter aftertaste. Overall, this is an average Belgian Ale but I’m not sure I would drink this again since there’s some better Belgian brew out there.

Cherry, raisins, citrus, honey, wood and a bit burned sugar. Deep red brown, not much carbonation, creamy low head. Dark burned sugar flavors, a bit fruitiness, woody brandy aftertaste. Medium bodied.

Very dark chestnut, hazy. Thick yellow-brown head, quite stable. Very alcoholic nose, sweet liqueurish, portwine (BBd is passed!), walnut oil. Sweet taste, overlayed with heavy, perfumed notes of cigar leaf, bittersweet chocolate, vinous. Esters. Very filling, very alcoholic, but velvety. Very good try. Makes the blonde pale in more than one meaning.

Pale orange (cold haze). Thick, fluffy white head. Nose yields hops – grain - …and salami (???). White candi sugar, too. Vague bitterness upon a lot of sweetness. A deep sugary, syrupy pool of sweetness wherein one doesn’t want to drown. Finish is more flowery, grassy. Somewhere a taste of burnt sugar. Medium bodied, very alcoholic for its ABV. Sweet aftertaste. Not very refined. Ought to do better.

Slightly hazy ruby color, medium brownish head. Some big-bubbled carbonation. Aroma is very malty, licorice. Malty taste, quite metallic also. Sweet metallic palate, slightly bitter, light alcoholic burn. Indeed a bit like Leffe Brune.

Frothy and light, slightly a mixture between a lager and wheat beer. Very hopped aroma, again slightly wheat beerish. The flavour is a mildly hopped lager, rather than a Belgian ale. Overall a very good beer.
