Gravity cask at the Drayman’s Son, Ely. Very dark brown, a bit flat-looking with no head to speak of. Coffee and charcoal aroma. Focussed and intense. Taste starts sweet but the burnt coffee bitter pervades just after the initial sip. Body’s a bit thin and flat but it’s not the end of the world. I like this but... a bitter? Are you sure?

Cask @ Calans, Hebden Bridge. Golden with a frothy head. Has a well-balanced character with some malts, but its hops are just about dominant. Strong tasting, but its strength is certainly not overbearing. There’s some grain its aftertaste.

Re-rate 21.2.20. Struggling a bit more with this one as the malt is very heavy and the liquorice flavour is extremely strong. 3.1, avg rating 3.3. Cask at the Holborn Whippet. Dark brown, noticeably translucent. Chocolate malt, spruce and a hint of resin in the aroma. Balanced bittersweet taste, with a long hoppy finish. Candy sugar, sarsaparilla and pine in the aftertaste. Very well done. 3.5.
