Description
Our story began back in 2009, Old Dominion Brewing Company had been brewing and serving craft beers in Loudoun County Virginia since ‘89 and was a beloved fixture in the county. However, in 2009 the company had been bought by AB InBev and later relocated their operation to Delaware, which of course left a large void in the local craft beer community. During this transition, Matt Hagerman, Lost Rhino’s founder, had managed to purchase some of Old Dominion’s brewing equipment, including its 25 barrel brewhouse and started getting together a business plan. By starting his own adventure in brewing, he would also help bring the spirit of craft beer back into Loudoun County. Since Matt had been a brewer at Old Dominion, and knew exactly what he needed to make this goal a reality. So he found his own space, set up the brewhouse, fermentors, brite tanks and not too long after in 2011, began brewing some of our first and most beloved brands: New River Pale Ale, Rhino Chasers Pilsner, and Face Plant India Pale Ale right here in Loudoun.

Nowadays, Lost Rhino has grown quite a bit since it’s founding, but we have never lost sight of our love for the craft. In the brew house, we take pride in bringing classic styles and local flavor in all of our beers. Everything we craft is personal; we thrive on choosing the scenic route, the tough challenge, the road less traveled.

It’s time to Get Lost!

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thin tan head, only a centimetre tall. Aroma of roasted malt, metal, caramel, earth and some nuts. Medium-bodied; Strong rich malt flavours with a lot of pungent grain and yeast notes with some earth, bitter hops and a little sweetness from the caramel. Aftertaste shows grain, roasted oatmeal and pungent rye flavours, metal, alcohol and a lot of bitterness from hops. Overall, a bit too pungent for me and compared to most in the style that you’d find in the Czech Republic. Not a bad offering, and glad for something different, but this isn’t worth going out of the way to try. I sampled this sixteen ounce pour on draught at Whole Foods in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 18-January-2017 for US$4,00 at the end of my driveway.

Deep clear brown and copper coloured body with an amber glow and a thinnish, fast-dying tan head, only about a centimetre tall. Aroma of alcohol, peat, toasted malt, cognac, oak, vanilla, pit fruits and a big dose of apples, pears and toffee. Medium-bodied; Assertive oaky and dry grain flavour with some malt, peat, caramel, alcohol, vanilla and a hint of cedar and other woods. Aftertaste shows some toffee, a lot of oak and woodsey flavours with a big alcohol kick, some malt and very little else - this one is actually quite thin and very simple with no real complexities outside the wood flavours. Overall, a pretty substandard Barley Wine, especially after significant aging; If there were a lot of flavours in this bottle upon capping, they have REALLY subsided over that time, much more than they typically would have in two+ years. If you have a bottle of this, it’s just better to drink right now and not age it any further - save space for other bottles. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Tyson’s Corner (Falls Church), Virginia on 06-March-2014 for US$7,49 sampled at home in Washington on 08-January-2017 after the first [fake] snowfall of the season. Bottle 179 of 672. Released in 2014 // Purchased on 06-March-2014 // Sampled on 08-January-2017

Sample at GABF 10/08/2016, thanks to my sis for assistance with note-taking. Clear orange-copper color with a medium off-white head that dissipates quickly. Spotty lace. Tart fruit, yeast and malt aroma. Medium body with flavors of funky yeast, grapefruit and malt. The finish is funky citrus and yeast. Decent overall.

2 month old can, tulip glass. A: Pours a glassful of loose foam. Even retains. Not good. The beer itself is pretty good looking. Extremely hazy dark yellow. Turbulent carbonation seen through the murk when held to bright light. S: Very nice tropical aromas of peach, melon and maybe some pineapple astringency. T: Very different from the nose. Once the head subsides it has warmed a bit, revealing bitter pine and sharp citrus pith. A faint sour bread malt note at the end. M: Light and thin but with some resin at the finish. O: The over-carb issue is disappointing but does not ruin what I think is a good and fairly distinctive SIPA.

4oz draft pour at Rustico Alexandria. Poured a very dark, almost pitch black color with a medium sized brown head. Bitter chocolates, fresh cut wood notes. Very light vanilla. Light burnt bitterness, mild creamy notes. Not totally wild about this one, but it’s strange - a little chalky, touch of funky notes cut through some of the imperial stout notes.

Refrigerated 12 oz. aluminum can poured into a snifter. Slightly hazy golden with small white head. Aroma is light herbal hops, medium/light body, lower carbonation, and little carbonation. Taste is soapy herbal hops.
