About
Richard Ootjers, Owner of Station 1280 and Thom Morrell are about to start up Antwerp’s first craft brewery in the centre of the city.

They plan to launch Uncharted Brew Co. in Antwerp’s Oudaan area at the Winkelcentrum, a small shopping centre known locally as the “beehive” for its hexagonal pattern and which sits at the base of Antwerp’s police headquarters.

That’s where Station 1280 moved to from the city’s central railway station in October 2020. The bottle shop and taproom had outgrown the cramped quarters at Antwerpen-Centraal, Ootjers said in an interview with the Beer Idiots.

At Oudaan, Ootjers now has more space, and a terrace where drinkers can hang out and perhaps even listen to some music in the open area.

And then there is the idea for the brewery in the space next door. He joined up with Morrell, who homebrews as BRWBRD, to create Uncharted Brew Co.

Draught Receding, bit fluffy white head over fully hazy, lightly orange tinted yellow beer; lace. Bit of citruspeel, hint of aspirin, fruity notes, if restrained. Sweetish, citrus, again this aspirin (salicylic acid) hint. Dash of orange juice, if with a markedly bitter finish. Medium boeid, hopoilslick, medium carbonation. Decent, not really special.

Draught Small white head left, with textbook lace over fully hazy orangeish yellow beer. Cookies, sucade, citruspeel, bit young green leaves. Dry, with dried citruspeel, grapefruit, but underneath sweet cakebottom, ever so slightly oxydized. Medium bodied at least, hopoily, even a bit creamy feel from the head. Pretty good one, balanced.

Draught Good, thick yellowish head over fully hazy orange-ochre beer. Pure citrus at first, orange, tangerine. C-hops in force, light ureum. Bitter-fruity. Lots of resins and hopoils, making it almost astringent. Finish is quite clean, bit straw-like. Quite (hopoil)slick, good carbonation. Medium bodied. Pretty good DDH.

Draught Medium, dense yellowish head, stable over still yellow-golden beer. Grapes and C-hops - excellent combination as it turns out. Lunaria, nectarine, white grapes, almost as muscat grapes, chalk. Initial bitterness surprises, putting one on the wrong foot, as then the (sweet) grapejuice kicks in. Hops blend in, giving extra aroma and gradually less and less bitterness. Certain fruit filling in; not very carbonated feel, quite slick, even filmy. Nice, succeeded combination, balance is excellent. I just wish for some more outspoken flavours from both.

Draught Dense, ultrafine pink head over pale strawberryjuice-coloured beer. Textbook lace. Nice, fresh raspberry smell. Slight bitterish fleeting impression, then clearly crisp malts and (rather demure) raspberry juice. Light acidity, fruity. Light body, refreshing; feels better carbonated than it looks. Nice - unfortunateley too demure. Next time double the raspberryjuice.
