Microbrewery in Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium 🇧🇪

Description
Richard Ootjers, Owner of Station 1280 and Thom Morrell are about to start up Antwerp’s first craft brewery in the centre of the city.

They plan to launch Uncharted Brew Co. in Antwerp’s Oudaan area at the Winkelcentrum, a small shopping centre known locally as the “beehive” for its hexagonal pattern and which sits at the base of Antwerp’s police headquarters.

That’s where Station 1280 moved to from the city’s central railway station in October 2020. The bottle shop and taproom had outgrown the cramped quarters at Antwerpen-Centraal, Ootjers said in an interview with the Beer Idiots.

At Oudaan, Ootjers now has more space, and a terrace where drinkers can hang out and perhaps even listen to some music in the open area.

And then there is the idea for the brewery in the space next door. He joined up with Morrell, who homebrews as BRWBRD, to create Uncharted Brew Co.

Draught Small, fluffy white head over peach juice-coloured beer. Exotic fruit, citruspeel, bit asafoetida. Hopburn, fiery MF,, citrus and other fruitpeel. Bit toasted, vegetable peels. Rather well-bodied, almost viscous. Well-carbonated. I fear the high ABV of this kind of IPA, is often the temptation into hop overdoses.

Draught Good, dense head on ocherish orange beer. Fruity-sourish. Expressly apricot - intense & inviting. Bit of chalk, proteinpowder, sweeter flour. Lactic acid, lemon, unripe stonefruit, fruitacids; wheat. Light if present lipsmacking acidity; fruitslick, medium carbonation. Hey Thom - love this one! We'll want more of this. A great fruitsour - and the named fruit IS there.

Draught Very thick-set, fine & dense off-white head over utterly muddy ochre-yellow beer. Huge head seriously hampers nasal perception. Citrus all in front, however, banana, slight hing of yoghurt and coffeemilk, but not sour. Bananapeel, citruspeel. Dry, dry malts and ditto C-hops. Again citrus - mostly orange. Duller than most Thoms' beers - if drier too. Very slick, hopoily, medium carbonation. Another really dry IPA.

Draught Very lightly yellowish, big and dense head, over fully hazy yellow beer; rings of lace. Freshly cut citrus, orange, lime, limequat; very faint hint of banana and guave. Bitterish, other grains (oats? - creamy), lupulin, grapefruitpeel, lime peel, and a backbone of sweet(er) pastryflour. Quite slick, medium bodied, good carbonation. Quite nice - I wonder if there are really other grains added.

Draught Thick-set tan head over jet-black stuff. Fine lace. Straw, ash, lupulin, citrus, orange juice, dried leaves - and some roast. Ashes - cigarette and woodfire - sweet roast, roasted coffeebeans, Pumpernickel. Finish - as it ought - really dry. There's a very faraway flavour of dark vegetables - spinach? Medium bodied, soft carbonation, slick. Quite good. Might have been (hop)drier even, to my taste.

Pours unclear, yellowblonde. Medium white, longlasting head. Scent is orange, mild PF, bit dank. Taste is full, touch sweet, but with an assertive bitterness. Less theamy than the 'modern' NEIPA, yet sweetish finish. Mild PF, bit dank, but mostly orange and stonefruit. Medium carbo. Nice, would have prefered a touch less sweet myself.

Draught Small white rim over fully hazy yellow-ochre beer, lacey. Fresh garden herbs/leaves, faint cigarette tobacco, hopoils, resin. Very bitter, with fruity esters. Bitter fruit, bitter melon, bananapeel. Rather fiery MF, light body; better carbonated than it looks. Almost raw, but for the aficionados of New World hops' overdose, heaven.

Draught Good dense white head over lightly carbonated golden beer with Grünstich, lacerings. Dry grains, straw, hay, Hessian sacks. Again (wet) straw, with faintly fruity esters - grapes. Main flavour is wet (ply)wood, but the esters remain in the background, making somthing subtly complex from apparently plain beer. Laurel/bay leaf, dried Christmastree after the fests. Light body, well-carbonated in feel, slick. Subtle! Good one - and now for a black IPA, Tom!
