Description
When Phil Bennett began planning for the Beowulf Brewing Company in 1996 there was no brewing going on in Birmingham. The original site of the brewery was in Yardley, where independent beer production started in the city in 1997. Beowulf began in a disused ex Co-op shop. Our original “signature” beer, Heroes Bitter, is still popular and sits at the head of an capacious list of regular and occasional beers. Now on the shore of Chasewater near Brownhills, Staffordshire the brewery is awash with Regional and National awards. Beowulf’s dark beers attract particular praise, devotion and accolades. The brewery celebrated its first twenty years last year and in 2018 we will finally get it together to have a beautiful website… turns out the internet is not a flash in the pan! Please come back and see it. All our cask and bottled beers will be listed along with some other interesting stuff.

Cask at Harp, Albrighton. Pours golden yellow with a medium sized foamy off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly floral hops with some hints of citrus. In the mouth it starts off quite bitter with a creamy texture but with some underlying sweetness that gradually increases. Flavour is a blend of traditional and floral hops with peel and stone fruits. Later there are traces of tropical fruit and marmalade, leading to a bitter and sticky finish. It’s reasonable.

[September 2023] Clear and golden with a bubbly white head and soft tropical fruit on the nose, and some grassy malt. Big mango notes up front which fade away quite quickly before a dry bitterness finishes things off

Handpull cask at the Kings Head, Leicester. It pours mid- to dark gold, clear with a small frothy white head. Light scent of grass, herbs, a touched of spiced orange peel. Taste is quite bitter almost immediately with a fairly harsh bitter finish, all other characteristics disappearing except for light caramel in the aftertaste. Soft carbonation. It's pretty basic stuff but served in very good condition bringing out its best.

Cask-conditioned at the Lime Kiln Bristol 3/10/2023. Deep brown in colour, with a slight, off-white, head. Aroma of chocolate, brown sugar and some damson sweetness. Easy drinking, with flavours of chocolate, more berries and a trace of liquorice before a gentle finish. Good.

Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours dark burgundy with a small cream head. There’s cherries and biscuits in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet and juicy, though some sharpness creeps in after a while. Flavour is predominantly black cherries, though with some roasted malts and hints of coffee and underlying caramel. Finish is fruity and slightly dry. This is a decent flavoured porter.

Shared third of a pint at the 31st Shrewsbury Beer Festival in St Mary's Church on 28th September 2023. Almost clear golden pour, white head. Aroma and taste dominated by the Mango flavour, strangely Margie didn't seem to notice it as much as me.
