Description
When Phil Bennett began planning for the Beowulf Brewing Company in 1996 there was no brewing going on in Birmingham. The original site of the brewery was in Yardley, where independent beer production started in the city in 1997. Beowulf began in a disused ex Co-op shop. Our original “signature” beer, Heroes Bitter, is still popular and sits at the head of an capacious list of regular and occasional beers. Now on the shore of Chasewater near Brownhills, Staffordshire the brewery is awash with Regional and National awards. Beowulf’s dark beers attract particular praise, devotion and accolades. The brewery celebrated its first twenty years last year and in 2018 we will finally get it together to have a beautiful website… turns out the internet is not a flash in the pan! Please come back and see it. All our cask and bottled beers will be listed along with some other interesting stuff.

Cask at the Blue Boar, Leicester. Dark brown, almost opaque with a loose khaki head. Resplendent aroma of hazelnut with notes of cooking chocolate and espresso beans. Sweet taste with a vegetal characte, followed by a slightly astringent bitterness. A beer that starts off well, but ultimately doesn't come off. Still worth a try.

Handpull cask at the Kings Head, Leicester. First pint out since you-know-what. Dark gold and just a little bit hazy with a fine white head and considerable lacing. Slightly woody aroma with some hay, some honey. Notable astringency in the bitter taste. Long astringent aftertaste. An unremarkable bitter, but it is nice to get some proper bitterness in a beer after six months of mostly sweet pales and stouts.

Final cask pint before the pub shutdown @ Tap and Can. Pours a deep dark ruby with a well-appointed creamy off-white collar. Aroma suggests a blueberry sweetness to come, and lo and behold it delivers with a lovely smooth, well-integrated blueberry presence, great condition and an excellent unimposing sweetness running throughout. Lovely stuff.

Half-pint, cask at Wellington. Shared with Finn. Beige bubbles at the top of a clear dark brown body. Clingy lacing. Promising smell of berry skins and dark malts. Blueberries up front to the taste buds, hints of liquorice. Mid-sweet malt-berry finish. Quite alright. (Birmingham 03.02.2020).
