Description
In 1449, Urbar von Wallsee first mentioned a brewery in Hofstetten. This is the oldest record we have of a brewery at this location, and it is a date that has granted us a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the Oldest Brewery in Austria. The tavern/brewery has been in the hands of the Krammer Family since 1847. Now in our fifth generation, we still proudly combine hops and malt daily to make the beautiful product of beer.

Bottle @ home picked up at Wine and Cheese STL. Thanks for forwarding it on to me, jcnielsen! Pours a hazy reddish brown appearance with a tiny head that doesn’t stick around long. Really thick caramel, rich malty, big dark fruity, fairly herbal, somewhat boozy nose. Kind of hard to stomach while being somewhat tasty. The flavor and booze are in your face from first taste and just linger and burn. Lots of fruity notes and a massive amount of brown sugar and toasted malts in the taste. Not all that bad but it’s a bit tough to drink.

Pour George, NY 50cl ($10): Pours a mahogany colour with a thick looking off-white head. Aroma is dark fruit, toffee, and caramel malts. Taste is somewhat sweet, but not cloying. Body is medium to heavy and gives it a pretty substantial mouthfeel. It doesn’t have excessive amounts of complexity. Hops are barely there. Still, it is pretty nice.
