Description
In May 1867, the Leinenkugel family brewery was founded in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin by Jacob Leinenkugel. He was a family man driven by an iron work ethic, and he knew that his German family heritage would play an integral part of his brewery’s success. Today, the sixth generation of Leinenkugels continues to brew some of the same family-inspired recipes that Jacob poured his heart and soul into. Over the years, our family has grown and so has our brewery, but our history and heritage remain at the forefront.

In appearance, no surprise: a light amber color, full head (off white), with good retention. Aroma is weak but has a little hop spice. Flavor has a tinge of caramel up front, a light body, and a firm bitter finish. Highly reminiscient of Yuengling, and perhaps even a tad better.

Another solid offering from Leinenkugel. They are probably my overall favorite large-scale USA brewery, especially since they always seem to be on sale for $5/6-pack. This was not quite as good as the Creamy Dark but still good. Deep reddish-brown color with a short-lived head. Roasted coffee flavor but a little on the light side considering the color. I will definitely get this one again.

This doesn't hold a candle to Leine's Creamy Dark. Passable wheat beer but there just isn't much under the hood.

I liked this one almost as much as Killian's. Similar color and flavor but this one seemed a little more carbonated but that may be because I had it in a keg. If I was having a Leinie I would take the Creamy Dark hands down.

My initial reaction had me giving this a 3.8, but I'm bumping it up to 3.9, because I was doing a side by side with it and Celebrator. Not exactly fair, eh? But it still was nice. Here's the review: Pours dark amber with good sized off white head, which was slightly fizzy and disspated a bit quickly, leaving quick light lacing. Full rich caramel aroma with some hints at cinnamon and warm sugar, interesting. Med body with nice caramel flavors but not as toffeish as it might be. Solid bitterness is maybe a tad too much.

A dunkel or a schwarzbier? I'm leaning towards schwarzbier: its darker and is less sweet and more spicy than dunkels. Anyhoo: Dark garnet/brown color with a thick light tan head. Spicy chocolatey aroma, and a warm chocolatey malt flavor. Medium body - clean - nice. One of Leinie's best beers.

Great draft to go along with Montgomery Inn's excellent ribs. One of life's pleasures is sitting on their patio over the river in the summer with a cold draft and a rack of ribs.

Rerate 1/30/03: Now that this is no longer my first Dunkel, I can still say this is smooth and easy to drink, but not as good as other Dunkels I have tried since. 1/19/02 (3.9): Very impressive color and aroma. Smooth pour and it earns the 'creamy' moniker, as I was surprised how smooth it was for a dark beer. My first Dunkel and I would definitely buy again.

Clean and easy drinking. Flavor is mild and palatable. None of the unpleasant bitterness found in similar beers, but less distinctive than some of the other Leinenkugel offerings

Fairly pale golden color with minimal head. Aroma moderately hopped with notes of citrus, flowers, grass - although to say I’m getting that much complexity out of such a restrained aroma is a bit much. Settles into a tart musty, almost orangey aroma. Very little up front, just a bare hint of malt, transitioning into a fairly strong, and pretty unbalanced, hoppy finish. This beer might work well as a lawnmower beer when really cold and drunk out of the bottle. If you pour it and pay attention to it, its just not going to be worth your while. As it warms (just a little) there’s a corny sweetness that arises just a tad. I get a general "pre-proh" lager feel out of this one.
