Slightly hazy straw colour. Herbal, spicy nose with accents of bready malts. Crisp, rich grassy herbal hop character. Dry bitterness and fairly clean breezy malts. Nice, dry, herbal finish. Yum. Thanks John!

A tasty saison shared by Joebrew. Salty and spicy aroma. Flavor has some malt, fruit, spices, yeast, and more hops than usual for the style, but not so much that it is unrecognizable as a saison. Very nice appearance, hazy yellow, some sediment. Quite good for a style that Americans rarely do well.

$3 for this 12 oz can at Barley & Hops in Bethel Park. Pop the lid for the big foamy explosion, uncontrollable off white foaming in the can and when you pour it into the glass. The aroma is that of many cheaper lagers I’m familiar with, I’d say sweetish earthlike and corn but I don’t see corn on the ingredients. On the palate there is a tingling above average carbonation, very nice! The color is darker than the typical pale yellow american beer. Its more like brown brown orange (11000). Certainly has a warming alcohol bite when it finds it way down your throat. Surprisingly has a maple taste to it, but it is not overly sweet. An industrial bitterness builds on the back of the throat with each sip. At times it seems to have a plastic taste to it. Finish is well behaved but that plastic industrialness seems to hang for a while. I’m not sure why others think this is so good when it comes across like a cheaper american lager in enjoyability.

On tap at the Mad Mex in Robinson. Ubiquitous pale lager color and appearance. Plain old lager beer aroma and the palate has some mild carbonation. A little processed pilsner hop impact. Almost comes on like an APA. Lingering finish of hop bitterness. A little more personality than I like in my pilsners. Needs to act more like a pilsner, not a hopped ale!

2005 750mL drunk on 7/4/07
Uncarbonated batch, thus it pours a nearly flat, amber/crimson-tinged mahogany. I’m able to coax a thin layer of dark beige bubbles, but it quickly recedes to ring, leaving legs on the glass, and light blotchy residue. Clarity is medium, despite the beer having been cellared for a long time and a careful pour.
Strong, vinous notes in the nose wrap about with liquorous alcohol vapors and succulent, fat malt sugars producing a well-balanced nose. Candy sugar is evident, giving a bit of hardness and some brazen roasted malts are, perhaps, a bit too noticeable on the finish, giving a strongly astringent hazelnut-coffee note that is only soothed, eventually, by a blossoming banana-vanilla-toffee sweetness. The yeast produces quite a bit of peppery phenols and sharp, dry, dark fruits, but is otherwise fairly overtaken by the malts and alcohol. A very honest rendition, though the sweetness fights with the emerging alcohol, as it warms, to produce a bit of a messy situation. Medium to medium-high strength of aroma.
Brash candi sugar hardness, mixing with tart fruitiness and a moderate amount of acidity all converge on the palate, wtih a strong molasses/brown sugar sweetness that helps cut back the tartness/dryness. But it seems to extend itself a bit too far, and without the aid of nearly any carbonation, it comes off as rather syrupy, or at the very least, heavily sticky/chewy. Toffee, dates, currants and concord grape vinousness are certainly very interesting, as well as the pleasant profile of black pepper, clove and vanilla yeast biproducts. But it’s missing that truly elegant equilibrium that the best in style show. This one goes from too sweet, to too alcoholic, to to astringent and back again. Probably a bit too much clove and astringent hazelnut-like notes as well, in the end. Alcohol is on the slightly-too-noticeable side as well. Regardless, it’s got all of the signs of a well-made beer, just dosent quite bring it together. But therein lies the greatest challenge with this style that is packed so full of ingredients/flavors. Someone sent me this bottle, and I don’t remember who, but thank you anyway!

On tap at Phoenixville location.....mahogany in color, with minimal foam...a flush of bitter dry hops, followed by a strong citrus peel....seed flavor of grapefruit, orange, and lemon, all the tangy citrus friends hanging in a glass together, lemon seed the leader, muddled malt and hop aroma, nothing too unusual...dry and tasty, hoppy and racy
