Standard Biergarten Meatpacking District 500ml draft ($8): Nearly black clear and clean body with a beige quickly dissipating lager head. Aroma is of roasted malts, lager straw, and some subtle German hops. Mouth feel is very nice. Maintains all the integrity of the lager with more robust flavor. Perfect on a hops day or cold I would think. Some chocolate and caramel notes make their respective appearances in there as well.

Pours amber gold with a large foamy off-white head. Aromas of light caramel and something grassy. Med. body with mildly foamy carbonation. Flavor is malty, but there is a good dose of herby/grassy hop. It finishes lightly bitter. Drinkable for sure.

~ 16 oz Pilsener glass draft pour at the Beer Authority in Lake City (Seattle), Washington. Tap Handle called this Köstritzer Lager. Pour is a clear golden yellow with a pretty one inch clean white head. Aroma is cereal grains, soft hop bite and mineral earthiness. Nice clean nose. Taste is the nose, gentle cereal grains along with the hop bite and mineral earthiness in the finish. Palate has nice carbonation and a thin to medium bodied. Really easy drinking, nice beer to accompany shopping.

19/03 0.5 l bottle. It poured dark reddish brown body with bigger brownish head. Weak burnt sugar and caramel aroma. Flavor was caramel and coffee malt, slightly acidic more than bitter, grainy. Fine, but strange. Thinner in body with bitterish roasted malt finish. Not bad, but nothing special and a little bit odd in negative way. So high rates definitely surprise me!

12 oz bottle. Poured a pitch black color with a small head. Aroma was pretty bland, boring. Nothing to really call home about. Slightly bitter. Not bad, but just boring.

Bottle from somewhere in Germany, the most likely two culprits being the Kaiser’s near Brauhaus Mitte and Bier-Spezialitäten-Laden, though I doubt that we’d have bought something this common at the latter one. Who knows really. And cares. This poured a dark dark red, pretty much black, with a slightly off white head. Soapy dusty nose, slightly roasty. Relatively intensive really. Hmm. Sweetish taste, light dogfood? Hmm, grainy really, wholemeal, light prunes and cardboard. Slightly creamy. Actually different from what I’ve imagined as a prototypical Schwarzbier. Not bad, not at all, but not one of the best dark lagers of this ABV range that I’ve had.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a shaker. Pours black with deep ruby and mahogeny highlights with a head is tan. Some lacing, medium body, and velvet texture. Taste is roasted malt, light coffee, light nuttiness, and a hint of smoke. Pretty good.

(bottle) Clear, pale golden coloured efferverscent hue with a medium-sized foamy white head. Moderately sweet and slightly grainy nose with lighter herbal hops. Sweet and slightly bitter flavour, light to medium bodied with a mild carbonation. Soft and slightly grainy malty base herbal notes; slim and slightly bitter and chalky herbal hoppy finish. Straight and just a bit boring Pilsener. 03.I.10

Appearance: Bottle pour, a dark brown color with a medium beige head. Aroma: Heavy malt aroma, both sweet and burnt. Some hints of caramel and maple syrup. Flavor: Very malty with sweet notes of caramel, some smoky character, mild bitterness. Mouthfeel: Relatively light in body - a bit surprising given its appearance. Well carbonated and crisp. Lasting impression of lightly roasted malts. Overall Impression: Overall pretty solid. A great session beer due in part to the low ABV. Certainly a cold-weather beer for me. Comments: I would drink this again. The Schwarzbier is a nice combination of lager crispness with some characteristics of a robust porter.
