500ml bottle direct from brewery. Look - clear amber, small white head and a small spattering of retention; ok Nose - caramel malts, lime; very simple traditional gold aroma Taste - biscuit malts, hint of caramel, some citrus; pleasant but unremarkable Palate - nice medium body for a 4.2%, minor chewiness, a slightly aggressive carbonation but nothing a hard pour wont sort. Overall - the blurb on the bottle states 'session beer bursting with a hop character of mango, tropical fruits and lime'. This most certainly is not the case. I like traditional but this beer feels out of time. Not sold on this one but its fine.

500ml bottle from the brewery. Clear golden pour with small white head, ok retention. Aroma is biscuit malts and citrus, simple but clean. Taste is the same, hint of tea and toast also. Light to moderate body and an average fizz; decent refreshing. Mild dry bitter finish. A simple but well put together gold. After just finishing off a rather heavy bodied milkshake IPA this hit the spot nicely.

On cask at the Real Ale Tavern. Appearance - dark brown with amber hues. Cream to tan head. Nose - caramel, chocolate and honeycomb. Taste - more Crunchie Bar. Palate - medium bodied, or close to it. Chewy middle with a good linger. Overall - good.

On cask at the Real Ale Tavern, Bewdley. Appearance - Amber to copper. Cream head. Nose - toast, toffee and light Bourbon biscuit. Taste - honey, toffee and caramel. Chocolate edge to it. Palate - close to medium bodied, creamy middle. Sweetish finish. Overall - a bit sweet for an ESB but nice all the same.

On cask at The Real Ale Tavern, Bewdley. Appearance - golden with a light haze and a cream head. Nose - lemon and biscuit. Taste - more lemon and biscuit. Light toast. Palate - light bodied, dry finish. Overall - decent example of the style.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford Pours a golden yellow with a tight white head and good lacing. Aroma is almonds and grains. Some hops in the mouth, but it’s mainly boiled cabbage with hints of lemon. Finish is basically grapefruit combined with dishwater. A pretty yuck beer all round.

RERATE (May 23) : Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours reddish-brown with a small cream head and good lacing. Malts to the fore in the aroma, plus some dried fruits. In the mouth it is slightly sweet with a creamy texture. Malts and raisins are the main flavours initially. Later comes some toffee, dark fruits and burnt bread. This is decent – much better than I remembered it. ORIGINAL REVIEW (Sept 21) : Cask at Imperial Tavern, Worcester. Pours a reddish brown with a small cream head. Not much of a nose (but then again I have a cold). In the mouth it is mainly summer fruits with a watery texture. Some malts and caramel as well. Not much of a finish either. A rather unremarkable beer - Plum Pig is much better.

Cask in Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford Pours the classic “bitter brown” with a small white head. The aroma is pretty much absent, but in the mouth there are hops, malts and toffee combined with some fruit. Finish is bitter, but not overwhelmingly so. A good standard bitter to round of my first visit to a pub for three months !

Hand-pulled half-pint in the Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford on 12th Mar 2020. Red hue to the brown/amber body, beige head that tried to hang around. Caramel and toffee esters and flavours in this winter brew, some dark berry hints too. Nice!

Hand pulled half at Lych Gate Tavern on 4th March 2020 !!! I don’t even know Black Haddock … Anyway, the beer. Pours an orange gold with a good white head. Nose has some hops and a small amount of oranges – not overpowering. Much more floral hoppiness in the mouth, along with maramalade and alcoholic strength. A generally rather oily textutre. Finish is bitter with burnt bread crusts. This is nice – one of their better beers. I think it’s more like an IPA than a pale though.
