On keg at Library in Durham. Appearance - hazy brown with red shades. Some head. Nose - dry malt and a touch of sweet spice. German Christmas biscuits. Taste - more spiced German Christmas biscuits. Nutmeg ginger and cinnamon in there. Dried oranges and chocolate too? Palate - medium bodied with a creamy yet crunchy texture and a balanced dry finish. Overall - yep good.

500ml bottle as Baytown Smuggler’s Haul. Chestnut brown with a foamy beige head leaving lacing and malty fruity aroma. Flavour is malt, mollasses, raisins, chocolate & coffee, nutty and light roast bitterness. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft to medium carbonation, malty bitter finish. Quite drinkable.

Bottle thanks to allmyvinyl. Appearance - Nose - opaque black with a nice fluffy head. Taste - massive toffee and nuts. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a balanced dry but generous finish. Overall - you have to invest your time here, but you get some back.

Tasted as Baytown Bitter from a bottle. Thin but stable, snow white head, clear orange blond colour. Aroma of caramelly malts, toasted bread, walnuts, unripe pear, red berries, orange peel, iron and something rubbery. Restrained fruitiness in onset, vague impression of peach and apple peel, a bit metallic with a retronasal sulphuric accent, bit powdery, smooth but rather thin mouthfeel, toasted biscuit-like maltiness, light oily and leafy hop bitterishness in the finish. Okay but in all, just another bitter...

Tasted in bottle version. Typical bitter with loose, not very stable, off-white head and a pale orange blond colour (’old gold’), clear with very little fizz. Aroma reveals a cooked corn-like quality (I strongly suspect pasteurization) along with hints of biscuit, apple peel, toasted bread, grass, white cabbage and walnuts. Round, slick palate with restrained, dry fruitiness (dried apricot) and medium carbonation; toasted and nutty malts leading to a dryish finish with medium long, herbal hop bitterishness. Straightforward and thirst-quenching but unremarkable. I assume this is a lot better from tap, as usual for an English bitter...

500ml bottle as Baytown Bitter from Co-op, Norton. Deep orangey amber colour, foam white head leaving lacing and aroma of bready malt, toffee, light roast, nutty. Taste is sweetish, malty, caramel, fruity, some bread & nutty notes with earthy bitterness. Light to medium bodied, soft carbonation, dryish light bitter finish. Quite OK.
