Bathams Bitter, regarded by some as one of the finest in the country, would never have been if it was not for the pernickety tastebuds of pub regulars in a quiet Worcestershire village, and the brewing skills of Mr D.B.A (Arthur) Batham.

From notes. Medium amber color with a thick white head. Aroma of caramel and light spice. Malty flavor with a slightly bitter edge. Nice enough.

Bottle at Chriso pre-GBBF tasting 09. Cloudy gold colour with thin white head. Musty on the aroma. Not good. In fact it was poor.

Bottled. Golden colour, small foamy beige head. Aroma is sweet malts, some cardboard, mild alcohol and some glueish/rubbery notes. Flavour is quite much the same. Rather sweet notes in the finish.

Cask, The Vine, West Bromwich. Golden, with a lingering slightly foamy lingering white head. Malty aroma. Smooth on the palate, but with a sweet not entirely pleasant flavour. As an accompaniment to the very good firey Indian food served at the vine it was fine though, and overall a slightly above average bitter.

Cask gravity at Planet Thanet BF 2007. Ruby colour with bubbly beige head. Odd smokey aroma. Some yeast. Has some very light caramel malt. It is extremely mild, but not poor because of that. Good example of the style. Malts are decent.

Bottle, picked up at Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbott 14-11-06. Poured a reddy/brown colour and was indeed very strong tasting, think I might upset the applecart a bit with my rating because although I didn’t not like it I found it a bit messy, alcohol too present and just a bit rough. It wasn’t sweet and it did have some positives but all in all not really my thing.
