Cask conditioned at The Three Guineas, Reading. Amber coloured with a slight, off-white head. Fruity malt aroma. Flavour was subdued, with a touch of malt and short, bitter finish. Not memorable.

[Cask at the Allied Arms, Reading] Poured an unusual copper red with a negligible white head and astonishing clarity. Too clear for a cask ale really, it somehow didn’t feel quite right!. No carbonation. Sweet and very fruity malt initially is soon taken over by a conflicting strong, dusty hop bitterness that fails to add anything to the beer. Drinkable, but poor. c7

50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Reddish amber with an immediately disappearing white head and very little carbonation; straightforward malt aroma; buttery malt flavours with some red fruit and gentle hops; the finish is dry and rather rasping. Pleasant but not very exciting.

[Cask at the Hobgoblin, Reading] Dark amber, no head. Silky smooth mouthfeel. Some fruitiness (apple & plum) and some toffee. Finishes with a rather stale bitterness - and given that this was in one of Reading’s premier real ale houses, I’m sure the staleness wasn’t caused by the pub. Not great. c7
