Description
History of the Brewery

East Anglia is home to some of the best brewers in the whole of Europe.

They practice their art steeped in age-old tradition and surrounded on all sides by endless fields of the world’s best malting barley. These days brewers are keeping abreast of the times and harnessing modern technology to help produce deeply satisfying beers that are taking beer festivals across the country by storm. East Anglia has always been famous for it beers and smaller breweries thoroughly enjoy the challenge of competing against the big players in the region.

One of the leaders in the field is the Wolf Brewery, whose brewers are driven by a passion to make distinctive East Anglia beers known to a wider audience. Its founder, Wolfe Witham, was the driving force behind the hugely popular Reindeer brewpub in Norwich during its heyday in the 1980’s.

The Wolf Brewery opened in 1995 on the old Gaymers Cider site in Attleborough but after 10 years of steady growth the business outgrew the premises. In 2006, a major investment was made in a new brewplant at a new premises, a couple of miles away in the village of Besthorpe.

More recently, Wolf has installed a state of the art bottling plant so that ale aficionados further afield can enjoy more of the prize winning ales.

As always quality comes first and a genuine quality product, crafted with care and packed with goodness, is something we are very proud to offer. The Wolf brewery is also part of the East Anglian Brewers Co-operative. This organisation is, among other things, taking steps to work with local farmers aiming for ‘full traceability’ so that eventually the beer can be traced right through from the grain to the glass.

Our ingredients are local, our recipes and our methods are local - and we always want to keep it this way. We believe that East Anglia is the home of quality brewing!

Cast at The Grand Assembly, Marlow. Poured a clear dark amber colour with a lasting frothy white head. The aroma is nutty, yeasty. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a smooth, red berry fruit, nutty, herbal, woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Cask at The Falcon (JDW), Wycombe. Amber-red with a beige head. Reasonable condition. Lots of sweet caramel. Some summer fruits. Twiggy, earthy bitter finish. Grew on me. Not bad.

500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Clear gold, small foamy head with little retention. Aroma of citrus and floral hops and a certain certain creaminess to the malts which does suggest wheat. Taste is wheat, lemon, flora, sweet with a mild bitter grassy and zest finish. Light to medium bodied, moderate carbonation. Not a German style witbier as per bottle. Nonetheless an interesting wheat gold ale I enjoyed it.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours a red-brown with moderate sized off-white head, nice retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malts, red fruits medley, light spice and citrus notes from the hops. Taste is a little odd. Has all the notes from the aroma with a zesty bitter finish but not sure it all melshes together. Part ESB, part red ale but lacks the best bits of both. Not that its a bad beer but I was hoping for better.

Bottle 0,5ltr: Amber coloured brew with an nice fruity taste and not so bitter aftertaste at all. Despite the low percentage of alcohol it tastes not so.

Cask at the table service only when I visited in the evening Two Lifeboats at the seafront in Sheringham. Golden-amber with a small head. Hoppy-fruity-bitterness, about in equal measure.

Cask @ Postal Order, Blackburn. Golden with a glow and a thick creamy head. Perhaps at its most 'bitter' in aroma, but this is a crisp hoppy ale in the main, with a bitterness to it.

Cask at the Playhouse Spoons, Colchester. Not in the fest list but sold like it is! Clear deep amber beer, good pale tan head. Smooth palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Slightly tangy malts, a modest and unsweet caramel. Ripe fruits abound. Ripe plum and citrus. A light and semi dry finish. Decent cask affair.

Cask at Moon under Water, Wolverhampton. Pours a slightly hazy golden orange with minimal almost white head and good lacing. Is very slow to settle but does so eventually. There’s dried apricots in the aroma, plus some hints of malts. In the mouth it is slightly sweet but with a little underlying bitterness and a creamy texture. Stone fruits and malts in the flavour plus hints of caramel, thin cut marmalade and summer fruits. Finish is fruity and slightly dry. Took a bit of getting used to, but decent enough.
