Description
Macks Ølbryggeri is the northernmost brewery in the world. The brewery was founded in 1877 by Ludwig Markus Mack. Mack is the fourth largest brewery in Norway, and is probably one of the strongest brands from Northern Norway. Our main production is located in Nordkjosbotn, approximately 70 km from Tromsø. Mack's historical sites in Tromsø houses our administration, the beer shop Kjeller 5, our legendary pub Ølhallen and Mack Microbrewery.

This contract brewed Norwegian Coop beer is supposed to replace the "Husets Fatøl" which was brewed by Aass. Typical pils golden colour, moderate head. Rather sweet and flowery aroma. Flavour is not very special, a little hops on a background of boiled vegetables. The Aass "Husets" version was better.

I have no idea why this beer is named "musepils" (= mouse pilsener), maybe it suggests that this is a beer for mice, not men. It's also possible that it alludes to Norwegian slang: "mus" = pussy (and I'm not talking about cats here). In other words: This is a girlie beer. Fizzy pale golden, acceptable head. Weak aroma with some yeasty fruitiness. Hardly any flavour, at least it's not offensive. Low bitterness. A slight yeastiness in the short aftertaste.

Golden color. Strange aroma: wax, straw, sweet white wine, malt. Good body strength and correct bitterness, but nothing special.

(500 ml can). Norwegian "summer beers" are the work of the devil! While their ordinary pilseners are summer beers good enough, every brewery, of some reason, now makes a lighter and blander version for the summer months. The one from Mack is not the worst of its kind, but that doesn't mean it's a good beer. Typical pilsener colour (not as extremely light coloured as the ones from some other breweries), very good head, weak flowery aroma, weak grassy flavour (as far as there is any flavour at all), low bitterness. This is for the target group who wants an ice cold thirstquencher without much taste.

Very sweet malt nose. Brown amber, low head. Malt, sweet and roasted, dominates, but a slightly fruity taste comes out in the aftertaste together with a bitterhop exit. Surprisingly weak body and thin mouthfeel. Thanks Sigmund!

Slightly lighter golden colour than Mack Pilsner, marginally darker than Mack Isbjørn. Moderate head, standard pils aroma. Light bodied, slightly metallic bitterness.

Bitter hop aromas and a little bit flower when stirred. Standard golden. Hint of malty honey and a bit flowers, but also slightly soapy. Thinbodied, balanced towards a soft sweetnes.

Rated 0,5 liter can 2002 - new recipe. Copper coloured, good thick head. Peculiar aroma - initially acidic, later dusty with spices: salt of hartshorn, cloves and cardamom - like stale Christmas cookies in March. Less prominent spices in the flavour, thin and watery mouthfeel. Aftertaste does not last for long. If you can''t have the "klasse F" Juleøl, Mack''s Julespesial is at least a better alternative in the "klasse D" than this one.

For a "klasse D" (= too low ABV) Christmas brew this is not too bad. Reddish brown colour, good head, mild spices in the aroma. Very well balanced light malty sweetness vs. hoppy dryness. But of course, the inevitable watery mouthfeel of a "klasse D" Christmas brew is there. Lacks "punch" - it''s not a brew that will kick off knife-fights, like an "Olde Norse" Christmas brew should(!)
