Description

0.375 l bottle from 'Smaakhuis', bottled in April 2022. Hazy, very dark ruby with a few off-white bubbles on top of it. Intensely sweetish-malty, quite fruity, gently smoky-medicinal aroma of caramel, raisins, vanilla, lots of whisky and peat. Quite sweet, malty, moderately bitter, slightly boozy, relatively fruity and rather smoky-medicinal taste of caramel, raisins, vanilla, whisky, peat and hints of chocolate, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, almost flat. Very nice flavours, quite heavy on the barrel but that's not really a downside, it probably benefits a lot from it.

330ml bottle. Jet black colour with average to huge, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, dark beige to tan head. Dark malty aroma with peat and leather aspects, some piney hop on top. Taste is bitter, roasty dark malty and bitter, piney hoppy, notes of dark chocolate, peat and leather; lingering, bitter finish. Oily-watery texture, smooth and dry, greasy palate, medium, soft, mildly prickly carbonation. Some non-catchy, arduous flavours, therefore a bit mono-lateral overall; too many heavy, earthy, irksome flavours, nothing alleviating to increase drinkability - therefore almost more Impy Stout than BIPA character.

Black with lasting head. Aroma has some oak and also dark malts. Flavour has a sharp hit of alcohol. Then the sweet element of the whisky comes through. The barrel has done its job.

Dark amber colour with thin head. I do get the sweet chocolate and cacao elements but also buttery, diacetyl notes too. Flavour is good. Some floral hop bitterness.

Deep brown colour with lasting head. Full and malty with touches of dried fruits. A little banana sweetness. Dry finish. Very much like a St Bernardus Abt or a Rochefort --- Beer merged from original tick of Kneiter Gieter Pater on 29 Jun 2025 at 15:42 - Score: 7
