Cascade Brewing has been a pioneer in the sour beer renaissance since 2006 and is the proud innovator of the Northwest Sour Ale. We are, by nature, the definition of artisanal brewing: we’re not bound by stylistic guidelines, just our own imagination and the ingredients we can access. Our distinctive sour beer blends feature fruit forward, barrel-aged ales that offer a complex array of flavors derived from Northwest grown ingredients, with each release capturing the unique subtleties of that year’s growing season. Our beers are brewed at our original brewery in Southwest Portland, then blended and aged at our nearby Blending House, which holds more than 1,300 oaks barrels and nine foudre tanks.

750 ml bottle shared by hogfodder on 3/20/08. Rick had been talking all night about this brewery, and finally grabbed this out of the cellar. Pour is mostly clear orange gold with smallish white head. Aroma of malt and bright apricot citrus fruit. Taste has a huge apricot bite initially, and then trails off to a nice tart sour finish. Tom called it well-managed, and that hits it spot on. Really well made, but the fruit was a bit over the top for me. In terms of beer making ability, this beer certainly did not disappoint. I desperately want to try more of this brewer’s beer.

When I first had this, I wasn’t nut about it. Upon a re-visit, this beer is a cloudy reddish-brown. Woody, cherryish aroma has hints of vanilla and some sugars. Big berliner-weisse style lactic tartness. Woody sour with lots of cherry finish. Nice good lactic fruit beer, much better than when it first came out.
Old rating: Slightly orange-tinged red colour with a thick, frothy head. Light cherryish nose is a bit too faint for my liking. Tart body, with some brown sugar and strange, almost phenolic notes. Slight stickiness detracts from the presentation. Reminds me of Storm’s lambics. 6-4-5-2-11 = 2.8

Hazy blonde, fresh abundant peach nose, clean, bright apricot, with a clean bright acidity, complex, very refreshing. Delicious.

Bottle shared with Marcus. Medium sour cherry aroma. Reddish brown color with a pinkish head. Thin to medium body with creamy carbonation. The flavor is indeed sour, full of cherry, and accompanied by malt. The finish is dry with lingering hints of sweetness, but overall sour cherry. Not sharply sour - just sour. Very tasty. Very smooth. Thanks to the staff at the brewpub for selling the bottle.

Bottle shared with Marcus. Thanks for the hospitality. Bottle conditioned. Aromas of blackberry and lightly roasted malt. Brown color with a decent tan head. Medium body with mild carbonation (though persistent in climbing out of the bottle). Flavor is tart berry, roasted malt, and a bit sweet. Finishes a little flat - not spectacular. Some yeast comes out at the end. Mild version of a Flanders sour ale - imagine a sour brown.

Draft at the brewpub. Suggested by bar staff. Floral hop aroma. Amber tinged gold color with a creamy, laceing white head. Medium body with very smooth carbonation. Flavor is slight citric sour with roasted caramel, and pleasant floral hop over all. Finish is very interesting. Treats the palate nicely. A pretty good brew.

Draft at the brewpub. Aroma of lightly smoked malt. Translucent darkish brown color with a lacing beige head. Medium body with fizzy carbonation. Flavor of smoky malt and mild floral hop. The finish somehow ends up rather balanced. A good brew (5.35% / 48.6 IBU)

Draft at the brewpub. Light malt and hop aroma. Amber golden color with a lacing white head. Medium body with mild carbonation. Floral hop over pale malt for flavor. Mildly bitter finish with floral notes, and perhaps a little wood. Excellent session ale.

Draft at the brewpub. Light citrus aroma. Golden color with a creamy white head. Medium bodied with creamy carbonation. Flavor of pale malt, noble hop, and something else. Maybe several other things. Seems complex and has strong flavors (6.23 % and 43 IBU). Finish seems rather citrus. Well balanced. Again, strong flavors. Really good.

Draft at the brewpub. Strong aroma of asphaltic properties (fits the style in my view). Brown/black color with a tan head. Flavor is rather old fashioned flavor like linoleum paste used to smell (this is not necessarily a bad thing). Flavor is hint of sour with grassy or floral hop and a lot of dark roasted malt. It’s a strong bugger (9.4 on the tap handle). The finish has a lot of coffee which was not noticed at the start. Overall it fits the style.
