Pours unclear amber red. Small white head. Smell is caramel, mild DMS, fruity tones, sweet. Taste is full, sweet, way better than the scent. No DMS ( perhaps not recognizable, or was I misled in the scent? Candy, fruit, easy drinkable. OK.

The third beer from this brewing company in Mariakerke near Ghent, one of apparently only 336 bottles made. Creamy, papery lacing, pale greyish beige, slowly opening head over a murky, cloudy ochre-hued chestnut brown beer - looking effectively paler than even a brown ale, and therefore nothing like any modern stout. Aroma of wet milk chocolate bars, granola, old raisin bread, coffee with milk, stewed plums, pear, peanuts, muesli, blackberries, baker's yeast, old brownies. Soft onset with dried blueberry, pear and unripe banana notes, dryish with subdued sweetness, clearly sourish and a bit infected - a bit 'dirty' already. Finely tingling carb, slick body of nutty, muesli- and milk chocolate-ish malts, sweetish and smooth with a bittering toasty edge and a soft graininess from the oatmeal; ends rather earthy, with a vague coffeeish note as well as an orange peel accent bringing some refreshment against the earthy yeastiness that dominates the finish. Some rooty, lingering herbal hop bitterness too. Not a really bad beer in terms of flavours, but visually and flavour-wise, this is clearly not a stout - I just added it as a stout here because of brewer's intent, but I think this is better viewed as a kind of Scotch. Rather weird, but interesting; still we are far removed from the quality level and relatively un-Belgian character of their two first beers here. Totally different from what I expected, and I'm afraid I'll have to take the failure in 'truthness to style' in consideration when rating this, as it isn't what I expect when I buy a bottle mentioning "oatmeal stout" in big letters on its front label...

Thnx to Tim , trough Ben ! Pours unclear blonde , small white head. Smell is juicy, crisp malts, citrussy, mild tropical. Taste is sharp, bitter ( too bitter for a pale ale... and new england means less bitter, more juicy ( amongst other things ) so ... really ? Nice taste nevertheless. Somewhat tropical fruity, juicy, average mouthfeel, only very remotely silky. Higher average carbo.

Taste: pretty bitter, hoppy, some sweet malt, lots of citrus, grapefruit, hoppy, bit resinous. Aftertaste: hoppy, citrus, bitter, grapefruit, sweet malts, nice one!

The second beer from this new Ghent microbrewery - Ghent is showing a whole lot of international style brewing activity these days, and has become all the more interesting in recent years if you know where to look. Tasted this one from tap at Geus van Gent, shared by Goedele. Thick, cobweb-lacing, very stable, egg-white head over a completely clouded, pale brownish-tinged coppery amber beer. Aroma of fresh orange peel, pink grapefruit flesh, pistachio nuts, dried mango, sweet red onions, frying oil, paprika powder, sundried tomatoes, persimmon, ripe pear, pine resin, slight marijuana. Juicy, fruity onset, lots of mango, persimmon and unripe banana, sweetish with a granadilla-like sourish touch somewhere, sharpish carbonation for the style but not as painfully numbing as with their Populist (at least from tap) tasted next to this one. Smooth, creamy, fluffy and full mouthfeel, very pleasant peanutty malt sweetness with soft bitterish edge, matching well with a juicy, tropically aromatic hoppy finish in which the mango, grapefruit and light pine return, adding mild bitterness on the root of the tongue - a bit more peppery than in the Populist, but still soft and highly elegant. Quenching, delicious and very aromatic little beer, even more interesting than the already remarkably modern, 'international' and non-traditional Populist; in terms of style, this one seems to be intended as a New England red IPA - the first with this particular set of features I encounter. Have an extra point for originality, especially within the often rather conservative environment of Belgian beer chauvinism.

From tap at Geus van Gent. Decidedly non-Belgian beer from what is apparently a new micro brewery in Mariakerke in the northwestern part of Ghent. Very thick and frothy, heavily cobweb-lacing, eggshell-white head over a completely cloudy egg yolk yellow beer with ochre hue. Luscious, strong bouquet of ripe mango, granadilla, white bread pulp, lemongrass, lime juice, green banana, lemon butter sauce, cedar essential oil, dough. Exotically coloured, fruity, juicy onset, mango, pineapple, unripe banana, unfortunately hidden a bit by a very harsh, painfully stinging overcarbonation that certainly is not right for the intended style. Fluffy, doughy malt sweetish middle, a tad buttery (diacetyl?), leading to an aromatic, mildly tropical finish breathing retronasal mango, grapefruit, marijuana and some pine; juicy ending as is the intention with anything bearing the "New England" moniker these days, softly bittering. Clearly hops have been applied here for aroma and not (so much) for bitterness; remains soft and mild, apart from that harsh overcarbonation which seems the biggest flaw here in view of the intended style (which, because of the soft character of the hops, I guess can indeed be identified as a New England APA). Very pleasant, elegant beer for sure, remarkably modern and internationally oriented for a Belgian - as there is as good as nothing traditionally Belgian about this. We can use a lot more of these postmodern 'hipster' brews in our country if only to offer the consumer as much diversity as possible and this one is very noteworthy, especially considering it is the first commercial attempt from this new brewery. One to keep an eye on.

20/X/17 - 33cl bottle @ De Geus van Gent (Gent) - BB: 31/XII/17 (2017-1796)
Very cloudy murky beige brown beer, small creamy irregular off-white head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Doesn't look like a pale ale at all, nor like a NE IPA. The haziness is - mainly if not only - because of the yeast, not because of lupiline powder. Luckily the aroma makes up for the weird looks. very fruity start, lots of pineapple, passion fruit, some caramel, citrus notes, sweet malts. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bit sweet, malty, some caramel, then bitter hops kicking in, fruity touch, some grapefruit, grains and hay. Aftertaste: very bitter and hoppy, dry, bit sourish, some sweet malts, bit of a medicinal bitterness in the finish, some overripe fruit, banana peel and caramel, very malty finish, some cow fodder and All-Bran. Not bad for a first try, definitely better than what I had anticipated.
