3 May 2019. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Cheers to Pieter & Anke's birthday! Pours hazy black with a lasting, slowly thinning, foamy, beige head; lots of lacing. Aroma of toast, walnut, fondant, biscuit, chicory, pink grapefruit, orange peel, pine resin. Taste is light malty sweet, subtle fig & chocolate, quite nutty though, supporting hoppy bitter tones of pine, orange peel & earth, toasty & biscuity malty accents. Dry, piney hoppy finish, lingering nutty malts, earthy, fondant & toast. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. The original BIPA taken to a higher level, but equally accessible in my opinion. 11 June 2020. Lots of toast, tobacco, dried fruit. Sourish fruit in the taste underneath a very toasty, earthy, almost umami profile. 30 June 2021. Tobacco again, prune, walnut, chestnut, GF juice, orange peel. Very bitter citrus peel, GF juice, bit toasty, bit nutty. Deeply earthy and resinous hoppy finish yet somewhat juicy. This BIPA keeps on giving.

3 May 2019. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Cheers to Pieter & Anke's birthday! Pours hazy ochre with a lasting, small, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of ripe mango, orange peel, yellow grapefruit, honey, lime, banana peel, frying onion, ripe peach & pineapple, very vague sulphur. Taste is medium fruity sweet, lots of ripe peach, pineapple & banana peel, quickly building a strong hoppy bitterness with spices, orange peel, some onion, whilst bready & honeyish maltiness glues everything together, even though a vague sulphuric hint pops up again. Dry, earthy hoppy finish, lingering peach, grapefruit, honey, some warming alcohol (hinting at - spicy - gin indeed). Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Surely one of Brouwbar's best, I could enjoy this mellow & spicy fruitiness over and over again.

3 May 2019. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Cheers to Pieter & Anke's birthday! Pours clear yellow with a lasting, small, frothy, white head. Aroma of yellow apple, pear, wheat, white pepper, apricot, white grape, ripe banana, indeed leaning towards bubblegum. Taste is medium fruity sweet, ripe apple & apricot mixed with quite a lot of estery banana, bready maltiness with bitter touches of apple peel, spices, pepper, and more sourish (lemony, wheaty even) towards the finish, which is dryish, slightly peppery hoppy, with lingering banana, apple & bread. Faintest dash of warming alcohol, somewhat sweetish sparkling wine-like. Medium body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. Very accessible blond beer but more 'crafty' than anything else in the genre. Nice!

New Brouwbar beer deliberately intended to please the crowds, because designed as a standard Belgian blonde. Creamy, dense, thick, egg-white, stable head on a misty, somewhat ochre-tinged apricot blonde beer. Aroma of ripe banana, even some chewing gum, lots of ripe pear, yoghurt, white bread slices, raw turnip or parsnip touch, lemon candy, honey, apple, chalky accent, light sweaty note. Sweet onset with pronounced banana ester, bit bubblegummy but not obnoxiously so, strong pear and green apple impressions, slick and creamy, very smooth mouthfeel, relatively softly carbonated for the intended style, bit yoghurty with a subtle dash of sourishness of a seemingly lactic nature underneath a rounded, doughy, white-bready pale malt sweetishness; mild floral hop bitterness in the end with minerally accents (gypsum) and a touch of lemon zest, quite refreshing, but remaining sweetish and creamy till the end. The light sourish-yoghurty edge makes this blonde all the more interesting, as well as the green fruitiness it unveils; unremarkable perhaps in the whole of Brouwbar's range so far, but it does bear that typical Brouwbar stamp of cleanness and creaminess. Well made and refreshing, surely this beer will serve its purpose as a summer quencher well enough.

The latest Brouwbar brew to date, a reworked version of BR22, with lighter malt profile and lighter ABV to try and make it more digestible. From tap at Brouwbar. Very densely creamy and mousy, thickly membrane-lacing, snow white head, misty apricot blonde robe with ochre-yellowish edges. Fragrant aroma of freshly cut sweet red onions, dry orange peel, sweetbread dough (or perhaps marzipan like the brewer suggested), green banana, paprika crisps, touch of ‘horse steak juice’, sweaty note, gypsum and soap hints. Clean ‘hop and malt fruitiness’ in the onset, notes of banana peel, kumquat and lychee with a crisp, lively, ‘cristalline’ carbonation effect, bit stinging even; smooth and slick cereally maltiness, dry white bread, soaked in very aromatic and mildly bittering hoppiness, adding expressive retronasal effects of pink peppercorns, blood orange, grapefruit peel and sweet paprika, a tad powdery; needless to say and as a result of the added amylase, the whole beer remains bone dry, as it ought to be for the intended style – and more so than its BR22 predecessor. Quite distinctive within Brouwbar’s range so far – and even if brut IPA has failed to conquer my heart so far, I must admit that this is a truly brilliant example of it; once again, Brouwbar has managed to reinvent an older beer and made it better than the original. Comparison within Belgium is far from easy – this is only the third brut IPA made in Belgium that I know of – but there is no doubt that this is very, very well done, so deserving of a high score on this site.

Another new Brouwbar creation but an original one this time and not a revisiting of a beer they did before: this is their first triple IPA, tasted the first time from bottle (thanks Benjamin!) and a second time from tap; this rating only concerns the tap version, as this beer, like all of the Brouwbar brews, is intended first and foremost to be enjoyed fresh from tap at the pub itself, of course. Creamy, dense, medium thick, egg-white, tightly paper-lacing, stable head over a cloudy, very deep amberish-hued orange blonde beer with almost brownish tinge. Intense aroma of fresh orange peel, fermenting lime juice, ripe mango, dough, Grand Marnier, lychee, ripe nectarine, maracuja, sweetbread, hazelnut, gin, melon, light sweaty note. Fruity onset, very luscious, quite intense and rather ‘tropically coloured’, hinting at peach, pineapple, melon and lychee with a dash of passion fruit perhaps, softish carb, very full and utterly creamy mouthfeel, with more silkiness than the expected oiliness. Soft doughy, lightly biscuity malt sweetish body with some mineral accents here and there as well as growing tropical fruitiness – the hops coming to full development, becoming very expressive with strong mango, apricot, sweet mandarin and lychee aromas retronasally; it adds a somewhat powdery and mildly peppery bitterness to the finish, with that pepperiness being strongly reinforced by heating, gin- and orange liqueur-like alcohol, which nevertheless remains in place considering its hefty ABV (and compared with the bottled version, which was a lot boozier). An IIPA following the current trend towards more sweet-aromatic and fruity hoppiness than actual harsh hop bitterness – I personally would not have minded if the brewer had opted for the latter, but considering he owns a bar as well where non-geeky beer drinkers need to be treated to something they can easily digest, it seems logical that this IIPA is more directed towards sweet aromatics than towards tongue-scraping bitterness. For what it intends to be, this is a truly beautiful beer, as forceful as it is elegant, with a remarkably high ‘drinkability’ and softness to it – clearly at or near the top of Brouwbar’s achievements so far, and I had all of their brews so far.
