Cloudy light beige to light orange beer, big solid creamy off-white head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: oh yes, that's the sweet spot alright! Lots of peaches, mango, some passion fruit, slightly sourish impression, tropical fruits. Lovely! MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: nice bitterness, citrus notes, passion fruit, mango, super fruity, very refreshing, grapefruit bitterness. Aftertaste: super fruity, pretty bitter, orange peel, citrus, little grassy, onion notes, dank hops, very nice one!

Brouwbar’s original session ale SA12 has already led to an actual session IPA (SI23) before, but this one, available for just a couple of weeks now, is another take on the same theme, with only the hops differing from the earlier SI23: this new version is hopped with Mosaic, Simcoe and Ekuanot, whereas SI23 contained Summer and El Dorado. This new version shows an irregularly edged, egg-white, papery-lacing, mousy and stable head and cloudy apricot blonde robe with vague ochre-ish tinge. Bright aroma of fresh mango, maracuja, mandarin juice, dough, green kiwi, freshly cut green bell peppers, minerals, some green olive, touch of stewing onion. Crisp, cleanly fruity onset, immediately reminiscent of mango but not too sweetly so, touches of kiwi and orange, very sharply carbonated with strong minerally side effects; soft doughy, very lightly biscuity malt ‘soil’, very ‘fluffy’ and smooth, soaked in highly citric, aromatic hoppiness, with lovely lime peel, mandarin, fresh bell pepper, mango, green onion and green kiwi effects – the citrus being prevalent – as well as a mild powdery bitterness in the end, enough to justify the ‘IPA’ moniker (contrary to its ancestor SA12). As I have stated here before, every time Brouwbar rethinks and redevelops a recipe, some or other improvement is there, clearly demonstrating that they are still growing in what they do – a key reason for me to keep close track of every brew they make, apart from the fact that they are very friendly and welcoming people, of course. This is a very crisp and brightly lit session beer, for me the best in the SA12-SI23-SI25 triangle because of this colourful and extremely refreshing citric aspect, which seems more outspoken here than in SI23. Now for that triple IPA that will be released next week – from the sample I got, that one seems very promising as well.

7 March 2019. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Shared with the lovely Anke! Pours hazy black with a lasting, unstable, small, frothy, beige head; some lacing. Aroma of raisin, dried fig, unripe blue plum, soy milk, milk chocolate, cookie dough, vanilla custard, mocha, peanuts. Taste is medium malty sweet, chocolatey & nutty but with lots of dark fruits coming through (raisin, blue plum, blackcurrant), building up a medium fruity sourness with red & black berries, almost port-like, only mildly bitter thanks to tones of toast & fondant, a bit powdery. Dryish, bit tart, earthy hoppy finish, lingering berries, nuts, chocolate, hidden (vague coffee liqueur-like) alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Surprisingly drinkable Imperial Stout (at that ABV), very smooth & fruity even, perhaps a tad too smooth; the revamped KS24 is definitely an improvement but I wouldn't keep this hidden from the public (right, Benjamin?).

7 March 2019. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Shared with the lovely Anke! Pours cloudy black with a lasting, very thin, dark beige head. Aroma of milk chocolate, cookie dough, toffee, brownie, vanilla custard, blackcurrant, salted peanut, mocha, kahlua. Taste is medium malty sweet, quite chocolatey (praliné, vanilla) next to prominent hints of dark fruit (raisin, blackcurrant, fig, in a more or less candied way), rendering it a bit sourish too; light, almost medium, roasted bitter in the middle, with toast, peanut, mocha, and even a vague umami touch of olive. Dryish, earthy hoppy finish, more chocolate, toast, peanut, and a subtle dash of warming (kahlua-like) alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation. This was enjoyable, but I still feel like it needs more punch in all aspects. Brouwbar has the ability to pull it off, though.

7 March 2019. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Shared with the lovely Anke! Pours clear pale golden with a lasting, small, foamy, off-white head; lots of lacing. Aroma of lemon peel, lemongrass, papaya, yellow apple, lime juice, unripe mandarin. Taste is light fruity sweet, notes of apple, papaya & pineapple, mixing well with a medium hoppy bitterness - mango, mandarin peel, vague grass & pine too, sourish lemon & lime in the back, and only vaguely bready malty. Dryish, floral hoppy finish, a bit piney, lemony, faintly lingering tropical fruits. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Endlessly drinkable Session IPA, albeit perhaps a bit too delicate.

7 March 2019. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Shared with the lovely Anke! Pours hazy dark brown with a very thin, frothy, tan head. Aroma of oatmeal cookies, walnut, (salted) pistachio, wet earth, fondant, toast, basket of red fruits, jam. Taste is light malty sweet, notes of cookie, nuts & toast quickly overruled by a medium fruity sourness in the form of blackcurrant & brambleberries, lactic & almost lemony but not quite there; bitter tones of earth & fondant, even faint grapefruit, and a chocolatey powdery effect offer balance. Dryish, tart, bit earthy hoppy finish, lingering red fruits, jam, chocolate, nuts, almost equally sweet & sour. Medium body, slick-oily texture, soft carbonation. Thoroughly enjoyed it, nice to see that Brouwbar keeps on experimenting like this.

7 March 2019. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Shared with the lovely Anke! Pours clear pale golden with a lasting, small, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of apple sauce (also apparent in the first Blonde), apricot, flowers, soap, pineapple slice, banana peel, jenever, weirdly some green cabbage (but not in an off-putting DMS kind of way). Taste is light to medium fruity sweet, apple, pear & apricot resting on a bready malty base; medium spicy bitter middle offers clove & pepper, 'bitter' white grape, some yeast, a sourish accent of wheat & lemon, even a bit flowery. Dryish, floral & slightly peppery hoppy finish, lingering yeast, bread, ripe yellow fruits, nice dash of warming alcohol (white wine-like to me). Medium body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. Well-made and quite complex, I prefer it over the B03.

The zealous Brouwbar in Ghent’s Patershol quarter has been quietly reinventing most of their original recipes – and even the recent ones, like KS15, are now being tinkered with and re-released under new numbers. Like KS15, their first attempt at imperial stout, now being replaced by this KS24 version, which is a little bit stronger. Tasted from tap at Brouwbar (obviously). Mousy, pale greyish beige, quickly opening head lacing in shreds over a jet black beer with only a very thin, warm burgundy-ruddy edge. Aroma of toffee, treacle, ‘koetjesreep’ and diluted chocolate milk, blackberry jam, diluted coffee grounds but subtly so, pear syrup, fig, caramel sauce, earth, walnuts and quite a lot of buttermilk – in other words, strong diacetyl. Sweet onset, fig compote, candied dates, blackberry jam, light sourish undertone, softish carb, creamy, slick mouthfeel (feeling lighter than its ABV would suggest, but still filling the mouth). The diacetyl effect indeed runs through it all, adding a certain, light tartness and ‘butteriness’; ends sweet, malty, toffeeish, a bit sticky even, with only very light roasty bitterness and a herbal hop touch. Alcohol warms a bit in the end, but generally remains very well masked. I thought most of the new versions of Brouwbar’s beers are an improvement compared with their predecessors but in this case, the differences with K15 remain very subtle; this one is still not roasted enough to qualify as a true stout so like K15, I would rather classify this as an imperial porter. Still a full, malty, accessibly sweet and highly drinkable beer, though, just make it more roasted and hop bitter and get rid of the diacetyl - I am confident a truly beautiful stout can come out of this with some more finetuning.
