Bottle from Brouwbar - many thanks, Benjamin & Jolien! About time we opened this one, as it's already been a while since the spot closed and we miss it to this day. Hazy dark amber-brown, stable, frothy, tan head. Aroma of ripe red grape, red apple, pink grapefruit peel, orange zest, tea leaves, gin, blood orange, rusk, dry biscuit. Taste has sweetish unripe orange, peach & apricot in a bready, biscuity, bit rusk-like malt body; bitter pink grapefruit, herbal tea notes and spices in the middle. Bitter & dry, peppery & grapefruity hops in the finish, lingering orange zest, herbal tea and warming gin-like alcohol. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Expressive and - apart from any style discussion - quite tasty; happy to have another bottle for later consumption. Congratulations again for Millie and forever cheers to Brouwbar!

28 May 2023. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Cheers to Anke, Maarten, Elise; and of course Benjamin & Jolien!

Hazy amber, small, foamy, off-white head. Aroma of mango, orange peel, pear, biscuit, apricot, honey, white pepper, shallot. Taste has sweetish mango & plum over a biscuity malt base; some spicy, dank shallot next to bitter citrus peel. Floral & slightly piney hoppy finish, softly bitter grapefruit lingering as well as stone fruit pit. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Somewhat more juicy classic IPA; simply flawless.

Hazy yellow, small, frothy, white head. Aroma of unripe banana, yellow apple, lemon zest, clove, white pepper, mandarin, jute, potato, straw. Taste has sweetish apple & banana; sourish citrus zest & wheat over a bready, cereally malt base, touch of spicy clove. Peppery hoppy finish with some grass, unripe yellow fruit & spices. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Utterly refreshing and technically impeccable.

Hazy ochre, small, frothy, off-white head. Aroma of overripe tangerine, lychee, pineapple, diesel, gin, honey, sweaty cheese, shallot, vague sulphur & margarine (not too disturbing). Taste has sweet tangerine, pineapple & lychee, vague sourish lime in a biscuity & honeyish malt body surrounded by notes of dank cheese & onion, slightly spicy at that too. Long, floral hoppy finish, lingering ripe, dank tropical fruits, citrus pith, shallot and warming gin-like alcohol. Medium to full body, oily texture, average carbonation. Less restrained but still a recognisable Brouwbar brew, this a very fitting 'goodbye' to a homely brewpub that offered modern, high-quality yet still accessible craft beer; a somewhat hidden gem in Ghent whose greatest asset was its sympathetic owners. So with that we thank Benjamin & Jolien and wish them all the best in the future. We will miss it, but hold out hope that at some point an 'X101' might see daylight. Cheerio!

Hazy dark brown-blackish, stable, tan head. Aroma of toasted brown bread, rye, coffee bean, burnt rusk, bayleaf, earth, dried grapefruit peel. Taste has sweetish apple peel & prune (but very restrained) in a malt profile of brown bread, spicy rye, toast, with a sidenote of grapefruit peel. Piney, resinous hoppy finish, lingering deep bitterness of coffee bean, brown bread and rye. Medium body, slick texture, average carbonation. Impressive 'little brother' of that IBI85 - we miss them both dearly already.

Original rating replaced by a more recent one, as the beer was released too soon (but at the latest moment possible, the goodbye party of the brewery).

19/VIII/23 - on tap @ Gents Bierfestival (Gent), BB: n/a (2023-xxx) Thanks to all for sharing today’s beers!
Ap: 8, Ar: 8, Fl: 8, Txt: 6, O: 7.5, Total:

Cloudy orange blond beer, big creamy white head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: nice, quite some tropical fruits, juicy, sweet impression, pretty dank, good stuff! No trace left of that diacetyl like it was soon after its release. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: gentle bitter start, tropical fruits, a bit sweet, resinous hops, decent stuff! Aftertaste: bitter, hoppy, resinous, grassy, a bit fruity, some grapefruit, nice!

1/VI/23 - 33cl bottle from the brewery, shared @ home, BB: n/a (2023-422) Thanks to Benji & Jolien for the bottle!
Ap: 6, Ar: 6, Fl: 6, Txt: 6, O: 5, Total: 5.8

Cloudy orange beige beer, small aery to creamy off-white head, little stable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: oh boy, lots of diacetyl, mango flavoured yoghurt, some ripe banana, peach flavoured yoghurt, a bit of sulphur. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: bitter start, some citrus, a little sourish, more bitterness, quite some grapefruit, diacetyl, buttery. Aftertaste: spoiled yoghurt, bitter, a bit spicy, some tropical fruits, bubble gum, more diacetyl, not good, the diacetyl will probably wear out if given some more time.

I’ll update with my tasting notes from Gents Bierfestival, where the beer was 3 months older, and in much better shape!
