6 June 2019. At Brouwbar, Ghent. Cheers to Ghent beer crew! Pours clear pale golden with a lasting, thick, foamy, white head; lots of lacing. Aroma of fresh & ripe mango, orange juice, yellow grapefruit, lime, honey, passionfruit, white peach. Taste is light to medium fruity sweet, notes of rather young mango & orange with a sourish undertone of lime & passionfruit, a bready character links this to a bitter core of yellow grapefruit, mandarin peel & grass, even a tad more bitter in the dry, earthy hoppy finish where grass & fruit rinds linger. Medium body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. Another well-executed, quenching, aromatic & actually quite accessible Session IPA.

After a preliminary unspecified session ale (SA12), Brouwbar has created different session IPAs, each time to the same basic recipe but differently hopped; this is the latest one, with Citra, Simcoe and Chinook. Egg-white, thick and dense, mousy, stable, irregularly edged head, hazy apricot blonde robe with warmer pale orangey tinge. Aroma of fresh mandarin peel, lemon butter, lychee, orange blossom, lime juice, grapefruit peel, minerals, white bread slices. Very cleanly fruity, straightforward onset, hints of green banana and some red apple, touch orange, fizzy and very minerally carbonation, slick and smooth mouthfeel, feeling fuller than it it actually (physically) is. Smooth cereally malt body, aromatically hoppy finish, bit citric and very lightly powdery, with a refreshing zestiness and light tropical lychee aspects to it, as well as something grassy; actual hop bitterness, however, remains very soft, actually a bit too soft for me, especially considering the used hop varieties which are old favorites. Very delicate and very refreshing, this will doubtlessly serve its purpose on Brouwbar's outside premises during the summery days to come, but I personally prefer the previous one (SI25) for being a bit less restrained in its hop character, especially in terms of sheer bitterness which could have lended even more body to the finish.

Brouwbar's thirtieth official brew, made in collaboration with another small brewer active in Ghent, Jorre Vanhemmens of De Mederie. Berliner Weisse with blueberries, raspberries and blackcurrant, tasted from tap at Brouwbar. Pale pink coloured, foamy, mousy, regularly shaped head, misty fuchsia red robe. Aroma of ripe blueberries, forest fruit yoghurt without sugar, touch cassis but more subtle than the blueberries, raspberries vaguely noticeable but even more subtle, raw rhubarb stems, sourdough, bread crumbs, minerals, lemon flesh, hints of pumice and green garden weed leaves. Lots of fruitiness in the onset, again with that sweet-and-sour, spicy-tinged blueberry element coming on stronger than the blackcurrant and the raspberry, sour but in a relatively soft, straightforward, refreshing way, lively carbonation, supple body. The fruit sourness works well with the deeper, more 'dim' sourishness of the wheat, lactic acidity is sufficient for the style but remains gentle, though all these sour elements combined make for a dry, very quenching overall impression; strong minerally side aspects too, yoghurty effect lingering along with a vague chalky touch (as always in this style). A juicy blueberry sourness remains, with blackcurrant and raspberry, as in the nose, in second and third position. Typical modern 'fruited' Berliner Weisse, in the vein of what Scandinavia and the U.S. have been doing for fifteen-odd years; the raspberry and blackcurrant dosage could have been a bit more generous perhaps, but the blueberry does its job well. Minerally, spritzy, refreshingly sour drink - of the kind many people doubtlessly can chug down gallons of, so this will probably be a hit at the Brouwbar in the upcoming summer.

Brouwbar's first 'official' commissioned beer, made with local honey in honour of the Ghent ' Bijenfeezzzt', a festival dedicated to the ecological importance of the honey bee, culminating in a fair held in the beautiful historical setting of the Sint-Pieters abbey. Snow white, mousy head, quickly opening and settling as a thin ring, on a hazy straw-golden beer with apricot hue. Aroma of white bread, butter, indeed noticeable 'wild' or acacia honey, blossoming field flowers, fresh camomile, some orange flesh, touch of moist white pepper, pear, rainwater, freshly cut red apples. Fruity onset in a rounded, cleanish way - as expected from Brouwbar - with hints of pineapple, unripe peach and some light banana, lively carbonated but retaining a smooth, slick, lean mouthfeel; cereally malt sweetish body with slightly buttery edges (I suspect a very low amount of diacetyl - not a big issue for me if it remains this subtle), minerally accents in the end, but more importantly, a flowery effect from the honey - not actual honey sweetness, as many still seem to expect from a honey beer, but that typical scent of blossoming camomile and other wild flowers and weeds, paired with a very mild hop bitter touch and lingering fruity accents. Straightforward, to the point, clean and quenching: a beer that will appeal to the general Belgian palate, much like their standard blonde, but the honey does add a pleasant, 'meadowy' aromatic twist.
