Earl Of Essex. Cask. Clear bright red - amber beer, residual white head. Palate is smooth and semi dry. Pretty low carbonation. Very light red berry fruits and mild malt dust. Whisper of marmalade. Light semi dry finish. Some carbonation would have elevated this no end.

Cask, Kazimier Garden, Liverpool. Reddish amber looks with a small off-white head. Sweet malts, fruit and a little hop presence in the nose. Flavour was similarly malt driven with earth and fruit notes . The hoppage rescues affairs from the abyss of mediocrity. Decent enough bitter finish. On the right lines.

Cask at Clapton Hart. It pours clear amber with a small white head. The nose is orange, tangy tangerine, Irn bru and wood. The taste is crisp, orangey, tangerine, marmalade, grainy, honey, jam and good deal of bitterness with a dry, citric finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Rather tasty stuff.

Cask at the Earl of Essex, 19/09/13. Lightly hazed golden amber with a thin off white head. Nose is bitter orange, light grapefruit, touch of pine resin, caramel, some hop notes. Taste comprises grass, orange pith, toasted malts, hint of grapefruit. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, some hop bitterness in the finish. Decent enough cask IPA - I wouldn’t have put this down as an ESB or indeed the GB default for beers not hoppy enough. It’s no big hop bomb but there was certainly enough hop and pine notes to warrant this being classed an IPA.

Cask at Lyric, Soho. It pours hazy amber with a medium off-white head. The nose is bitter-sweet, wood, brown bread, citrus fruits and faint jamminess. The taste is wood, earthy, varnish, resin, grapefruit zest and leaf with a pretty bitter finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Good level of bitterness, but fairly one-dimensional. OK.
