The exceptional property of four of our Ghent Gruuten consists in that they are brewed without hops (only the Inferno is brewed with hops). The research into alternatives to replace the hop herb was of course not without a struggle. After a course in biochemistry and several partnerships with various universities, the Ghent city beer saw the light of day. There are 5 different variations: Gentse Gruut White, Gentse Gruut Blond, Gentse Gruut Amber, Gentse Gruut Bruin and Gentse Gruut Inferno. A special “Maîtresse” beer is also brewed every few months. This beer is special because we experiment with different ingredients. Some examples of ingredients are: mango, lime, chili pepper…
The larger volumes, including for export to America, are brewed at the Bavik brewery in Bavikhove.

Bottiglia. Il gusto al naso è indirizzato verso l'orzo tostato. L'olfatto viene stimolato in maniera normale e l'esistenza olfattiva è sufficiente. Il cappello di schiuma ha una buona tenuta. La grandezza delle bollicine è medio-fine, con qualche bollicina grande. Il liquido offre una visione offuscata. Il colore è ambrato. Il corpo è pieno. L'amaro è pronunciato. La forza gustativa è elevata e permane in maniera sufficiente. Le sensazioni boccali finali risultano di birra beverina. Il retrogusto è di decente intensità. Al gusto vengono donati toni di caramello, miele, agrumi, spezie, arancia amara, erbe ed erbe aromatiche.

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is sweetish wheat malt, spicy yeast, spices, citrussy notes with lemon. Flavour is moderate to medium sweet and only lightly bitter. Body is light and a bit weak. Okay spicy Wit, though nothing to write home about.

Bottle from Speciaalbierpakket. Aroma is malt, spices, caramel, dark bread, clove, with a touch of brown sugar. Flavour is medium sweet and lightly bitter. Medium bodied. Sweet, very malty and spicy. Okay-ish, lacks some depth.

Bottle from Lekkerbier, Sint Nicolaasga. Aroma is ripe/dried fruits with sweetish malt, yeast, notes of prunes and figs, some banana, spicy notes. Sweet, bit sugary flavour, light sticky. A little above medium body. Not bad.

Little cloudy brown beer, small creamy beige head, pretty stable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: oxidized, a bit earthy, good roast, pretty yeasty, and I guess some chestnuts indeed? More oxidation and a sourish impression overall. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: good roast, a bit watery, bitter, sourish touch, coffee, earthy, slightly infected. Aftertaste: bitter, roasted, a bit malty, sourish, weird, oxidized, funky, ok but not really good.

Аромат не сильный но приятный, очень свежий как будто, немного цветочности и травянистости с запахом трав вроде гвоздики, цвет не сильно мутный, желтый, пенка белая средняя. Вкус очень питкий, немного водянистый. На первом плане уже больше специй и трав, хотя при глотке немного зерна и пшеницы. В целом мне нравятся такие груты, травянистость у них очень особая.

At ZBF 2011, Sint-Niklaas: Hazy yellow "Duvel-like"brew with an good spicy and fruity taste. An a good bitter finish.
