July 2009: Green 330ml bottle, part of a six-pack bought cheaply from an Aldi supermarket. Poured into a ’La Chouffe’ branded tulip glass. I am sure this is really the normal Original DAB Pilsner, same colour and taste/feel, but cheaper to buy. I wasn’t thinking correctly because I have a lovely old DAB Meister-Pils glass tankard that I should have reviewed it in. Never mind, I’ll have the others out of it. Good, firm white head on initial pour, fell away to a collar and wisp very quickly. Mid-range pilsner golden body with a few bubbles rising through. Odourless, more or less. Clean, crisp and dry, not a bad lager/pilsner at all. Ideal for parties in the UK where lager drinkers are going to be wanging back whatever is put in front of them.

50cl can thx to benzai. Clear golden colour with a decent white head. Smells malts, grains, ash, somewhat fresh. Tastes malty, sweet and somehow quite light for its abv. I was expecting way more alcohol in the taste, but it?s a good thing that it isn?t overwhelming. low carbo, thin to medium body.

Can 500ml.[ Trade by Countbeer ]. Clear medium orange yellow colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, white to off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, sweet malt, marzipan malt, alcohol, sugar. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet with a average to long duration, sweet malt, alcohol. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20120331]

Brown 500ml bottle, reviewed 16 days before it’s best before date in Aug 2011. Poured into an Abbot Ale tankard: good amber coloured body, the head of big bubbles soon filtered away to a wispy covering. The aroma is more malts than hops, unusual for an IPA. Semi-sweet molasses rule the smells, where are the hops? The hops don’t seem to be in the initial taste either. They do come into their own in middle and later during the sip/gulps. The 4.5% ABV sits well in the brew and although this doesn’t fit the normal IPA profile you’d expect it’s a pleasant drink. I love Batemans beers, this one, brewed for the Aldi supermarket chain (UK) isn’t great, but it’s still worth trying considering the cost.

500ml Brown bottle brewed by Batemans for the Aldi Supermarket chain: this one had a best before date of 30 Apr 2012, I poured it into my Abbot Ale glass tankard on 3 Mar 2012. As its name implies, this is a golden pale colour: well actually it is more leaning towards a copper/amber hue to my eyes. The head is a healthy looking white crown of large bubbles, minute trails rise through the clear, bright body. The aroma is of slightly cirtusy hops and baked malty bread. The taste is again hoppy and on the dry, bittering side, almost grapefruit in its sourness and citrus undertones. Refreshing is most likely the best word to use, this isn’t flavoursome or rich, this is a Pale Ale with a bite and some alcohol kick. When remembering it is a cheap supermarket beer it represents good value and I’d certainly think about buying more if my beer budget has to shrink in the future.

Bottle. Gold with a large white that fades rapidly to less than a coat. Mild aroma of grain and earth. A bit corny. Very thin with watery hay, some vegies, a finish that’s dry and a little herbal but without much bitterness. Lot very good and tastes tired despite a best before of 1/13.

Can 50 cl. Courtesy of fonefan. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Very sweet aroma of brewing syrup. Heavy body, very syrupy and boozy with a rough and crude finish. Hard to drink. 310312
