Description
Hanssens Artisanaal is the oldest independent geuze blender in the whole world. At Hanssens, no beer is actually brewed! Instead, they pursue a profession that was very important in the history of lambic style beers, they are solely blenders of beer.

Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

375mL bottle, pours a clear golden with a medium white head. Aroma has plenty of leather, moderate barnyard funk, lemon tang, and some mildew. Flavour has plenty of lemon tang, old furniture, some mildew, gentle funk, a touch of leather, and very gentle acidity. Not the deepest funk character, nor much acidity (especially compared to Hanssens’ standard), but very well-constructed and pretty elegant. Excellent.

Bottle. Nice (old school) presentation with a paper wrapper around the bottle. Color: Clear golden, white head. Aroma: A lot of rural and moldy funk, fruity notes. Taste: Puckering tartness, vinegar, quite strong rural and moldy funk, oak wood, fruity grapefruit, lemon, green apple. Bit foamy mouthfeel. Typical Hanssens. Too acidic for me, personally.

0,375l bottle at home. Bottled 11/2022. amber clear color, medium big white head. smells funky, earthy, herbal, hay, peppery, tobacco, nice to very nice smell. full body, soft carbonation. tastes funky, citric, earthy, some hay, tobacco, bublegum, bit lactic, peppery. finishes dry and lightly sour with notes of hay, earthy and peppery notes. hmm, its a nice one, but not totally convincing for me. Love the hay notes, has a light sweetness to it, that hides the underlying sourness pretty well, some rather sharp sour notes (volatile acids) come through though. Lacks some funk as well, a tad simple even. Overall sharp acids are a bit too noticeable.

375ml bottle from Vanuxeem. Pours an unclear gold, small amount of foam settled atop. Razor sharp, bright, crisp, flavoursome, fruity, with a lingering acidity. An assemblage of Hannssons best foundres was never going to be anything short of excellent, but its also good to see them return to their pre-overly acetic era.

0.375 l bottle from 'Het Huis van de Geuze', bottled in March 2024. Hazy, golden with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Slightly sweetish, sourish, very funky and quite fruity aroma of hay, overripe lemon, horse blanket, white pepper, oak, leather and light vinegar. Slightly sweet, gently sour, rather fruity, quite funky taste of overripe lemon, leather, oak, white pepper, horse blanket, apple and some oak, followed by a medium long, rather tart, quite woody-dry finish. Medium body, gently astringent and quite effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Well-balanced Geuze, quite smooth and refreshing.
