Description
Hanssens Artisanaal is the oldest independent geuze blender in the whole world. At Hanssens, no beer is actually brewed! Instead, they pursue a profession that was very important in the history of lambic style beers, they are solely blenders of beer.

Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

Shortlived white head over cold-hazed orangey golden beer. Horseblanket, farmyard odours, wheat, crabapples, putteke. Wheat, even some sweetness as from sugarcorn, again apples and cider. Faint (sweet-)lemon and lemonpeel. Bit (white) bread. Chewy, somewhere (wheat)filling. Well carbonated, light body due to some mild acidthinning. I was over the moon with the Extra, but this is even better! Hanssens places itself again at the absolute authentic gueuzeblenders top with this excellent, mild oude gueuze.

i'm still unsure wether this is the replacer of the (earlier) Oude Geuze, or if this will be a side-offering. All I know is, the kavo Noevo Geuze extra was pretty good!
Just to be sure, as a possible goodbye, I had a Oude Geuze last week - which was the most acetic to date, even for Hanssens. Consuming it felt like a job, 'sure, i'm man enough the be able to drink this' whilst dying inside. So, needless to say, expectations are high for this one - even though the (average, not a peak like the one last week) regular Oude Geuze had it's moments of specific craving, so I do hope they maintain this being available, somehow.

This one pours a warming yellowblonde with orange tints, cloudy. Foam stability is very low. Scent is very brett-forward, loaded with woodyness, overripe green treefruit, even a bit floral. Very grainy as well. Amazing ! Taste is bonedry, yet very vibrant. notes of lime, lemon, unripe (what a contradiction) green treefruit. Mildly floral on the back. Less 'heavy' funky, more of a 'lighter' experience, fresh and inviting. If you've ever thought about what would be the ideal summer geuze - here's your answer.

This has very, very little to do with the Oude Geuze by Hanssens. This isn't a 'new take on', this is a whole new beer altogether. Even within the saturated market today, this one jumps out. It's medium acidity (which is very low for hanssens) but it's so, so , so damn vibrant and fresh. At times, this feels more like a (low alcohol, obviously) cocktail of acidity, fruityness and carbonation, rather than a beer. High hopes are exceeded here. If this is the new face of Hanssens, we are in for a wild ride !

375mL bottle at Man in the Moon, pours a clear bright rosé with a tiny head. Aroma has plenty of tart currants, strawberries, and moderate barnyard funk. Flavour is soft, with plenty of currants, soft strawberries, and a touch of funk. Really nice blend of fruits, with a soft, almost floral finish. Lightly acetonic but still within reason. Very good.
